SWE Science Fair
Overall 1st Place: Riley Engel
On February 7, 2018, Spartans in fourth and sixth grade competed in the annual SWE Science Fair. Our Spartans conducted experiments, recorded data and observations, and created presentations to showcase and analyzed the data collected to present their results to the judges. The top three students from 4th grade were Carter Cooley, third place, with his project called "How to Make the Perfect Shot in Basketball," Makenna Waltz, second place, with her project called "Baking Soda & Vinegar Reaction," and Haddi Johnson, first place, with her project called "May the Force Be with You! ELECTROMAGNETS." From the 6th grade, Lani Coffey placed third with her project "Indiana Whitetail Deer Movement," Ellie Gosser placed second with her project "Radical Rainbow," and Riley Engel placed first with her project "How Well do Disinfectants Work?" Overall winners were Riley Engel in first place and Haddi Johnson in second place. Congratulations, Spartans!

The third and fifth grade students participated in the SWE Science Fair in a different way. Southwestern's third grade students participated in the SWE Science Fair by conducing a class experiment, "Dissolving Peeps." Students observed how various liquids effected a peep and recorded their observations. Our Spartans learned that liquids that were more acidic would dissolve the peep at a higher rate. Fifth grade students worked collaboratively in small groups and participated in the design thinking process to create prosthetic legs for an imaginary person. Students were given specific information regarding this individual and designed a prosthetic leg to the individual's specifications. Way to go, Spartan Scientists!
