Be Safe, Exercise Responsibility, Engage in Learning, and Practice Kindness!
Hello Roadrunner Families,
It was a busy week here at First Street School! We're reaching the point in the year where classroom routines are set, lessons are becoming more academic, and we're settling into a flow. Be sure to help your student make good choices with their sleeping habits so that they are ready to learn when they come to school!
According to the National Sleep Foundation, the recommendation for elementary aged students is 9-11 hours of sleep per night. Two ways they recommend helping your student get more sleep is to put away screens (TV, phones, tablets, etc) at least one hour prior to bedtime, and to set a consistent sleep routine where students go to bed and wake up at the same time each day. Sleep is one of the most effective tools we can provide our kiddos with to help them in school, and it's completely free! You can find more information about helping student academics through sleep in this article: https://www.sleepfoundation.org/children-and-sleep/sleep-and-school-performance
With a little rain in the forecast this week, please remember to label your student's coats and jackets with their first and last name so they are easy to return and don't end up in the lost and found.
Thank you for sharing your students with us this week! Have a wonderful week, Roadrunner Families!

Updates and Important Information
One option is to set aside a special place near an electrical outlet where your student's backpack goes every day after school. They can plug in their Chromebook without even taking it out of their backpack, so they will not forget it in the morning in the rush to head out the door to school.
We have a very limited supply of loaner Chromebooks, and the number of students forgetting their computers each day has been exceeding that number. We want to be sure that each student has the tools they need to be successful at school, and your help with setting up a routine is an important part of that process! Thank you for your help!
Affordable Connectivity Program
Internet connectivity is an important part of academic success in education today. Luckily, there are a lot of different options to ensure that your student has access to internet at home. If you do not have internet at home, you may qualify for discounts on internet and computers through the federal Affordable Connectivity Program.
Find out if you qualify by following the instructions at the link here: https://getmyinternet.org/?j=9063912&sfmc_sub=198464893&l=2048712_HTML&u=202253676&mid=6409703&jb=17020&utm_source=edu_acp_2022.09.12&utm_medium=email
Please take a moment to review the dress code information from our Student-Parent Handbook with your student. While we don't often have concerns with dress code, it is a good idea to review this information on occasion. Please note the areas that we see most frequently arise are those related to ripped clothing. While ripped clothing is definitely in style (even I wear ripped jeans on occasion!), please be sure that the rips in your student's clothing do not expose their underclothing or midsection.
The Student-Parent Handbook can be found on our school website, or at the link here: https://resources.finalsite.net/images/v1655241369/wpusdk12caus/d3a0b6eqffcpxtxgfsjh/2022-2023FSSStudent-ParentHandbook.pdf
Illness at School
We have had a number of students coming up to our health office in recent weeks who have ended up going home for tummy concerns, fever, and other minor ailments. You know your child best, so if they report that they are not feeling well, please use your best judgement prior to sending them to school.
Children who are truly not feeling well have a hard time learning in class and also may expose other students to illness.
Remember, to call into our office to report an absence if your student will be staying home!

Updated COVID Protocols
Effective this year, California Department of Public Health has replaced most of the requirements about student quarantine with recommendations. The one remaining requirement is that students who are ill must be fever-free for at least 24 hours without the aide of fever-reducing medications before they are able to return to school. Please see the documents below for more detailed information.
Unvaccinated Volunteer Requirements:
Under the requirements of CalOSHA, unvaccinated volunteers must follow the same guidelines as unvaccinated staff. This means that unvaccinated volunteers must provide a negative COVID test from within one week of their volunteer date. A home test will suffice for this requirement. As always, all volunteers are encouraged to self-screen for COVID symptoms and stay home if they have any symptoms that cannot be attributed to a known condition such as allergies.
