We Are A.R.M.Y. Strong!!

"As a member of the Continental Army, I promise to be Accountable, Respectful, Motivated to Learn, and do mY best."

Our vision is to ensure that all students are WMS ARMY Strong and are prepared for high school, college and careers.

Please be checking with Students on their grades and homework completion. Many of the homework assignments show a green checkmark when they are completed. We are seeing many students starting assignments but we need to continue to improve the number of students completing assignments.

8th Grade Spring Pictures

On Tuesday, April 16th, 8th grade students will be taking their Spring pictures. These photos will be used in their Promotion Folio with their certificate and will be posted on the slide show. Students will be invited to wear their dress clothes for these pictures. Ladies can wear dresses and skirts that are longer than fingertip length. Tops must cover their shoulders and chest. Gentlemen are invited to wear their dress pants and shirts with ties. They will be allowed to change clothes after the pictures if they would like. You may purchase a package with these special photos by sending in the form. If your child did not bring the form home, you may also order online at www.inter-state.com/order and use the code 38266WA.

8th grade baby pictures needed

Mrs. Cravens puts together the end-of-year slide show for the 8th graders each year. In order to complete this, she's asking for each 8th grader to bring in a baby picture. All pictures will be returned to the student as soon as they are scanned. You can also email her at mara.cravens@evsck12.com.

ISTEP is out and ILEARN is in

This year, the state of Indiana has changed the End of Year test for our students. It used to be called ISTEP, but the new test is ILEARN. It is created by a new company and has many more technology enhanced items and a focus on application of skills. If you missed our PTSA meeting last week about the new test, the information can be found at this link: https://www.doe.in.gov/assessment/ilearn-families

If you have questions about this test or how Washington Middle School is preparing students for higher expectations, please contact Mrs. Branson at 812-477-8983.

ILEARN State Testing Window April 24-May 6

Students will be taking the new ILEARN State Test during this window. It is a very different test this year as students will have an unlimited amount of time. The question items are also very different and MUCH more difficult. We've been practicing in classes and have been looking at different practice items, so students aren't blindsided. We will be taking one test each day for as many days as we need. If your child will be absent during that time, please make sure to communicate in advance with Mrs. Coughlin. We don't want anybody to miss out on one part and not get scored. Thank you for your help with this!

WMS Plant Sale for Massiah Washington

Saturday, April 27th, 9am-12pm

Washington Middle School large gym

Please plan to swing by the large gym on April 27th to get your spider plants and a variety of vegetable and flower seedlings! The Green Team has been growing and splitting plants all year and will be selling them next weekend. This will be a cash only event. All proceeds will be going to assist with the purchase of the bench in honor of our friend and teammate, Massiah Washington, who passed away last semester. We have collected more than enough bottle caps, but we need to send them in with the funds to make the bench.

Yearbook Sales

Washington Middle School yearbooks are now on sale! Students can order yearbooks until April 15th. The price of a yearbook is $16.

To order visit, www.inter-state.com/yearbook and enter the code 32076D, or pay with cash or check, payable to Washington Middle School.

"I See It, I Take It" Policy

According to our School and District policies, students are not to have on hoodies, jackets or sweatshirts with large logos, cell phones, ear buds or food in our classrooms and hallways between 7:30-2:30 unless a teacher gives specific instructions to have them. Our policy is that any staff member who sees these items will take it, and students can pick that item up at the end of the day. We have some uniform sweatshirts for those students needing them, and we lock the taken items up in the main office until pickup after 2:30. If cell phones have been taken multiple times or have become a significant distraction in class, parents may be asked to come to school to pick the item up. We explain to students that this is not a referral or a disciplinary situation unless their response to the redirection is inappropriate or disrespectful. If students just cooperate when asked, there will not be a disciplinary action taken. If you have questions about this policy, please contact Mr. Meyer or Mrs. Branson.

8th Grade Recognition Ceremony Scheduled

Our 8th graders will be recognized at the Promotion Ceremony on Monday, May 20th at 8:30am in the Bosse High School Auditorium. This is a formal ceremony, so students are encouraged to dress up for the occasion.

The dress code: Ladies can wear dresses, skirts or dress pants. Dresses and skirts must be longer than finger tip length and shoulders must be covered. If girls are wearing dresses with tank tops or straps, they can cover shoulders with sweaters or jackets.

Gentlemen are encouraged to wear dress shirts and ties or bow ties. Jackets and suits are encouraged.

Parking: Parking will be limited to the football stadium parking lot along Highway 41. Please enter the doors that face Washington Avenue. The main parking lot will only be open for handicapped family members.

This is a formal event to honor the work of our students. We ask that you help us model appropriate and respectful behavior during this event by clapping respectfully and refraining from yelling as student names are being called. This is out of respect for all families, so they can also hear their child's name.

Homework

Students will continue to have homework nightly for this semester. Please help your child by creating a scheduled time and space for them to complete homework. We're seeing major improvements in students' study habits when they're completing some homework every night. If your child is working on homework longer than 15 minutes each night in one subject, please contact your child's teacher. These assignments shouldn't take longer than 1 hour total for all four subjects.

Teacher Websites

Each subject in each grade level has a class website. These websites are updated with the topics for learning, resources to use as support, and any important dates for the classroom. Click on your child's grade and then select the subject to get to the specific information about your child's class information. If you have any questions about the information on the website, don't hesitate to email your child's teacher with questions or concerns. If you do not receive a response, you can email or call Mr. Meyer or Mrs. Branson.
