Parts of Atom

protons, neutrons, and electrons

Q: How do protons and electrons differ in their electric charge?

A: Every atom has a positively charges nucleus (includes protons and neutrons) surrounded by negatively charged electrons. (pg. 501)

Q: Which has more mass- a proton or an electron?

A: All protons are identical; similarly, all neutrons are identical. A proton has nearly 2000 times the mass of an electron, but the positive charge is equal in magnitude to the negative charge of an electron. (pg. 501)

Q: How do like charges behave?

A: Like charges repel each other. (pg. 501)

Q: How do opposite charges behave?

A: Opposite charges attract each other. (pg. 501)
