We will meet in the "Think Tank" a.k.a. DeForest Room/Office. As soon as your kids are dropped at specials.
Teachers this will be a short intro to our process and meeting expectations. Mrs. DeForest and I are looking forward to beginning our instructional time together with you on a strong and positive tone.
Please bring a chromebook and your lesson plans electronically.

Please make sure that you look over the items below and see if there are any last minute add-ons for your best year!
- Write family welcome letter.
- Determine best room arrangement.
- Decorate bulletin boards.
- Create student nametags.
- Decide on class rules and determine associated rewards and consequences
- Copy Quote of the Day onto chalkboard.
- Prepare an activity for assessing beginning writing skills.
- Print a monthly calendar for each student, and choose a calendar activity.
- Prepare to introduce students to the Web by locating an appropriate back-to-school scavenger hunt.
- Print a teaching master to use to assess beginning math skills.
- Sign up for an education newsletter.
- Select an appropriate lesson plan and tie it to national education standards.
- Prepare to discuss the important topic of bullying with students.
- Browse student records and then determine strategies for dealing with problem behaviors.
- Think about ways to boost study skills throughout the year.
- Plan strategies for building student connectedness.
- Prepare for awkward transitions by keeping handy a selection of 5-Minute Fillers.
- Plan your bulletin boards.
- Decide where you want to post announcements, menu, and calendar.
- Designate boards for subject area work, and boards for students to design.
- Decide where you want to display your students' original work.
- Set up two or three learning centers to get started.
- Create signs for your room to help your students learn classroom rules and routines.
- Prepare your class rolls and permanent records.
- Post a cheery sign with your name outside the door along with a class list. Students and parents will appreciate it when they go looking for the right room.
- Find out your students' schedules for lunch, gym, art, music, and library.
- Gather and organize all your supplies:Textbooks and supplemental materials
- Plan books
- Classroom reading books and read-aloud titles
- Attendance materials
- Paper clips
- Various types of paper (e.g., writing, construction, math)
- Folders
- Different kinds of tape
- Grade book
- Rubber bands
- Stapler and staples
- Pencils/pens
- Tissues
- Prepare take-home packets for your students. Some of the items you'll want to include are: Emergency forms
- School rules
- Supply list
- Bus or transportation rule
- Find out which students may be going to special classes.
- Check out library books for students and books for read alouds.
- Set up a folder for a substitute to use in case of emergency, containing the following:Daily schedule
- Seating chart
- Prepare a file for correspondence from parents.
- Prepare a file for faculty bulletins.
- Obtain a copy of state and district curriculum standards.
- Write tentative lesson plans for the coming week.
- Make copies of materials you'll be handing out during the first few days.
- Write your name and other important class information on the board.
- Make a checklist for returned forms (can be used later for report cards and other items).

Since 1999, NC Beautiful, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, has provided K-12 teachers across North Carolina with resources to develop educational programs that enhance and support the Common Core & Essential Standards. Through the Windows of Opportunity competitive grant, teachers are rewarded for their innovation and creativity as they promote environmental stewardship with their students to improve appreciation of the environment, and, in turn, the beauty of our State. We look forward to serving you!
Grants: Up to $1500 per teacher or classroom for use between January and June.
Eligibility: Windows of Opportunity are available to the following:
- Certified K-12 teachers in the state of North Carolina; Project leaders must be full time teachers at the applicant school.
- The applicant school must be a recognized, accredited institution within the state of North Carolina. Public, private, and charter schools are eligible.
- The applicant school must follow the recognized Common Core & Essential Standards. After-school programs, mentoring programs, and preschool programs are not eligible.
- Prior recipients of grants may not re-apply in two consecutive years.
APPLICATION: The application should be completed and uploaded with the following timeline:
- Submission period – August 1 – November 30, 2017
- Evaluation of Applications – December, 2017
- Winners Announced – January, 2018
- Grant Period – January – June, 2018
- Final Report with Pictures & Copies of Receipts – June 30, 2018
