In celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr...
"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."

MBK Houston Welcomes New PACE Intern, Elvin Quioto!
My name is Elvin Quioto. I am a senior at Worthing High School in Houston Texas. I am number 10 in my class with a 3.3 GPA. Next year I will be attending Texas A&M to study biology in the fall of 2017.
As part of my academic base classes I help the administrators in the front office at school. I help them by filing papers, and answering the phones, and help the students with their homework whenever they need help. I like doing this because I get to interact with teachers and students and in one way or another I am able to leave a mark at my school.
With this new internship with MBK I would like to learn how to become a better member of society. I can't remember the last time I was so excited to come to work , but in my short time here it's not like I'm going to work it's like I'm coming to learn something new and improved myself as a person.
MBK WIN WIN Workshop – Eliminating Deadly Encounters between Youth and Police
On Thursday, Dec. 15 My Brother’s Keeper presented the WIN WIN-eliminating deadly encounters workshop. The workshop is designed to reduce violent confrontations and conflict between youth citizens and police. This workshop occurred at the YET (Youth Employment Training ) Center After School Program at Finnegan Park in historic Fifth Ward.
75 youth underwent the training conducted by retired Deputy Steve Williams and eight (8) law enforcement officers. Students were from Wheatley feeder elementary and high schools. These included Atherton, Nat Q Henderson, Mc Reynolds, and Fleming schools.
In a fast moving and highly interactive workshop youth were taught the best practices of how to have a successful encounter with law enforcement. Students were curious about tazers and why the policeman chose law enforcement as a profession. Policemen explained that they were not a hostile unfriendly force but their mission was to protect them from “bad guys”. Policeman also mentioned that some of their fellow officers would sometimes act as “bad guys” but that they did not support bad guy behavior.
Students also wanted to know why they were called the “Po Po” and 5 0 (five O). The workshop ended with a flurry of questions and a group solidarity hug of interdependence.
