In Like A Lion or A Lamb
At our recent SCC meeting, a great discussion centered around Students Achieve and the amount of information that is available to families. Like most school divisions across the province, the NESD utilizes a live and open grade book software. What this means is that families can access their child's grades (K-12) any time from anywhere in the world. With this comes 2 added responsibilities on teachers:
1) Grade books must be kept current and up to date.
2) Grade books must e designed in a way that tells the story of the students' learning.
At PPCS we believe that the purpose of student grades, first and foremost, is to provide an indicator of where the students are at in their learning journeys. For this reason, we are committed to ensuring that our garden books are as up-to-date as possible, to ensure that families have access to the most up accurate information about their students' learning.
Part of the discussion with the SCC focused on how many of our families may be unaware of what Students Achieve is or how to access it. I know that most if not all of our high school students access Students Achieve (or SA) on a regular basis to check their marks. This is where their marks are housed. High school teachers put feedback on student work and record the mark in SA. This puts more focus on the feedback, which is where the richest learning opportunity can be found. However, we realized through our discussion that some of our elementary families may be less familiar with SA. For that reason, I wanted to take the time in this Bear Blast to give you a very brief overview.
Families can access SA by visiting ppcs.nesd.ca, clicking on the parent tab, and choosing Student Achieve. Please don't use google and search for it as it will connect you with PEIs Students Achieve, which will then give you an error. You will be asked for a username and password. If you do not know this username and/or password, contact your child's teacher and we can get you that information.
Once you log in, you will see all of your child's classes with their current marks. If you have more than one child there will be a drop-down menu in the top left-hand corner where you can select different students (only your own children).
If you click on any of the focus areas that are listed you will be taken to a more in-depth look. By clicking the Show Assessments tab you can access the individual assignments and see how your child did on each of them.
This is a great way to stay up to date on how your child is doing and monitor any missing work.
If you have any questions or need to get your username and/or password, please contact the school and we will get you set up right away.

It is important that you log your minutes online to make sure that our community gets credit for the minutes.
Every day, we will push out a Facebook post that contains the minutes that each class has earned throughout the school day. We encourage families to record weekend and family activities as well. Every minute helps to move our community closer to winning.
Thank you for your support in this!

BOOK Fair (March 15-24)
As with many things this year, it will be a little bit different; we will be hosting it online.
We are confident that we will be able to host a very successful event. Scholastic offers over 450 titles and every purchase earns points for the school to purchase new books for our library.
As part of our book fair this year we are hosting Family Nights on March 17 and March 24. On these nights, all purchases come with free shipping. They will run from 6-8pm. On these nights, Mr. Mielke will host a live story reading at 6:30. Please click the button below to submit story suggestions. I will choose from the options that you send me. If you tune in and answer Mr. Mielke's question in the comments, you will be entered to win $20 toward your book purchase. Stay tuned for more details.
