Alice Carlson ALC: Rooted in 30 Years of Applied Learning
Happy New Year!
Our kinder students now refer to themselves as "pre-first graders" and were excited to tell me all about their reading goals this morning. One of my family traditions is setting goals for the new year. We do so after celebrating our wins from the previous one. So many of mine involve our students, staff, and community, and I am a very thankful lead learner for that!
2023-2024 Intent to Return Forms will go out next week. For new families, this is confirmation of your return to Carlson next school year. In addition, 5th Grade students will come home with a form for families to indicate their middle school option. They are going out early this year because the district will run our lottery earlier this year.
I hope this newsletter finds your family embracing the potential of 2023. We are excited to be back and ready to launch our second semester successfully with you, beginning on 1/17/2023!

Staff Update
Nurse Tracy took a leave of absence in the fall to have surgery and support a family member. She planned to return this semester. However, after seeing the need to be more available to support her family, Tracy has decided to retire. She will still be at Cook a few days a week.
Below is a message from her. Warning! You may shed some tears.
In 2003 we were thrilled that our oldest, Mary Kate, got into Carlson. We loved our time as parents- doing all the Carlson things and bonding with our new community. In 2005, Sarah, our second kid started and in 2008, Caledonia began her time here. When Callie started kindergarten, I started the nursing program at TCU. The nurse that was at Carlson started recruiting me as soon as she found out what I was up to. Nurse Toone got her wish when I came to Carlson in February of 2011 after she retired.
Alice Carlson has been a gift in every sense of the word. This community help form who my children are today (and we still say "Happy Happy Birthday from all of us to you- with a clap!). So many traditions and values that my family keeps are from our time at Carlson. My words are not doing justice to the immense presence Carlson has had on us.
My time as the nurse has also been absolutely wonderful. I have loved watching the kids grow up each year and watching them become what Carlson fosters and develops-- that curiosity for learning, a sense of belonging to a community, and a respect for others. It has been a joy and a privilege to be at Carlson each and every day- as the mom and as the nurse.
