Welcome back!
It’s back-to-school season and no matter how old your child is, the transition back can be filled with nerves, excitement, and often big adjustments. As we begin another school year together, it's important to start thinking about creating new routines and structures. Below are some useful strategies and tips for a successful start of the school year.
Tips For A Smooth Transition Back To School
- Talk and listen! Talk to your child about their feelings about returning to school. Talking about the transition can help your child understand why these feelings are coming up. Validate that it's normal to feel nervous about a new class and/or new school.
- Reassure them that they are not alone. First day jitters are normal.
- Reestablish a healthy bedtime routine.
- Have your child help in the getting ready process. Let your child pick out their favorite backpack. Allowing your child to be involved in the process will help them feel more in control.
- Arrive to school on time so your child can adjust to the classroom routine.
- Help your child choose a transitional object to bring to school and store in the backpack (family picture, small stuffed animal).
- Equip them with strategies to control their worries (deep breaths, counting backwards, positive affirmations).
- Create a goodbye ritual to repeat each day with your child.
- After you say goodbye, make a quick exit!
