Foothill Engineering Students Advance to State Competition
On Saturday, April 1st, a three-student team of Foothill Engineering students traveled to John Glenn High School to compete in the Chevron Design Challenge. This competition is open to students who are currently in an Introduction to Engineering Design class or those who have previously completed the course but have never competed in the Design Challenge. Chevron sponsors this nationwide event in order to expose students to real world design challenges and encourage them to pursue a career in engineering. The three-student team that was selected by IED instructor Mr. Shell, consisted of current IED students Junior Marian Zaehringer and Freshman Nathan Olsen, as well as Sophomore Thomas Yoshizumi who completed the class last year. The three arrived at the event location Saturday morning and received the challenge. In a span of several hours they had to design a new headphone that would appeal to a specific demographic, would be light weight, and could be manufactured at a reasonable price. They had to brainstorm a product, sketch out the design, create a 3D model on the computer using Autodesk Inventor, and then pitch their product to a group of seven engineers. At the end of the day the team from Foothill was awarded second place out of eighteen schools. Each of them received a $100 gift card to Amazon and they qualified to compete for the state championship in San Diego next month. Congratulations to the team and good luck at the State Competition!
The Stacks Club
The Stacks Club was created in 2013 by Claire Norman in order to promote a love of reading around the community. The club is a part of a non-profit organization called Little Free Library.
A “little free library” is a free book exchange in which anyone can participate. The Little Free Libraries are usually small wooden boxes, although they can come in any shape or size. People build the “little free libraries” and put them up around town filled with books that are donated from various places. Anyone is allowed take and read these books, in exchange for a book of their own. There are over 50,000 registered Little Free Libraries in the United States, and in over 70 countries around the world.
The main goal of the club is to inspire a love of reading and allow anyone to have access to books. At a recent book drive club President Grace Norman, and Vice President Mary Norman, received over 400 books with which they were able to refill their libraries as well as make a donation to the Boys and Girls Club.
To find a Little Free Library around town, simply go to the Little Free Library website where you can find a map of the Libraries near you. Students are welcome to join The Stacks Club at anytime during the year; the next club meeting will be held after Spring Break to discuss the locations of new “little free libraries.”
NEW TRADITION AT FHS
Color Rush A Huge Success!
Foothill's ASB started what they hope to be a new tradition: A Color Rush. On Friday, March 31st over 400 students attended the 1st Annual Color Rush and were blown away by an amazing Dj. Students got free glow sticks and ‘Color Rush’ t-shirts. After dancing the Knight away all cooled down with Dippin’ Dots Ice Cream.
Artist at Foothill
Fresh from art exhibitions in London, Norway, Miami and New York, our very own FHS Art teacher, Jeff Gillette, along with his wife and other artists , displayed some of his art work
during the Santa Ana Art Walk last weekend. All were welcomed to see a selection of paintings, photographs and sculptures before Mr. Gillette's big solo show in LA's Chinatown on Memorial Day weekend! Mr. Gillette currently has a gallery in London, New York, and Los Angeles. He recently took part in the NUART Street Art Festival in Norway and continues to be invited to Art Fairs around the world.

Shout - Out for Dedication!
June Abrams-McDonald FHS Ceramics Teacher gives a shout out to 4 students who exemplify dedication." Brie Ratkevich (senior) is a second year advanced student of mine who is in my room during lunch and 6th period daily, working on her long-term project goals. Alyssa Beltran (senior) is a third year student who comes to my class every day during homeroom, and then again for the end of the day in order to work on her long-term goals.
Kevin Clemente (senior) took my course last year as a junior but did not give the class his all. Now he comes to my class every day during lunch and 6th period when other seniors leave school just so he can finish projects that were never finished.
Teja Pipariya is the 4th student who is in my class daily but isn't even a student of mine!" Great job Knights!
