What's the Buzz?!?
September 21, 2015
A look ahead...
- Monday, September 14 our 8th graders will participate in a special morning. Thanks to Kathy Ott for organizing this for the students. They will participate in Mass, reconciliation, hear a witness from Mr. Scott Scalf, and share a pizza lunch.
- I will be out of the building on Wednesday, September 16 for a principal meeting. If you need anything you can reach me on my cell at 330-819-9234.
- Our 4th and 5th graders will have an exciting opportunity to experience a recreation of the Revolutionary War Days on Thursday, September 17 at Hoban High School. These students will return at 11:45 am and eat a packed lunch at school.
- As you saw in my Thursday newsletter, our 8th graders finalized (with the help of Julie Goshe and Kathy Ott) our SHINE acronym: Serve God and others first, Have honesty in all things, Inspire others by your example, Nurture others with His light, and Embrace the Gospel and the Golden Rule. Denny will be ordering a bulletin board that will be placed outside the office as a space to recognize our students. We will begin recognition on October 1. Thanks to those of you who have already been recognizing our students! We have two awards that we will give out to students that were also created by our 8th graders and Mrs. Ahbe- you'll get copies of these this week!
- All new teachers will have a new teacher meeting on Tuesday, September 15 from 3:30pm-4:30pm. Location is TBD. All 2nd year teachers are welcomed, and encouraged, to attend as well.
- Mark your calendars for our October Parent/Teacher conferences. October 20 we will have conferences from 4:00pm-8:00pm and October 22 we will have conferences from 5:00pm-8:00pm. I look forward to hearing your feedback on how conferences are set up, and if we may need to revisit the way in which they are implemented for next time.
- The flow of traffic between lunch and recesses was much better this week- thanks for working with your students on this! In an effort to keep the cafeteria staff as organized and prepared as possible I ask 2 things: 1. Each class send the correct amount of hot lunches each day. Over the past week the staff had to prepare a number of additional meals that were not accounted for. And 2. that teachers pick up their hot lunches when they drop their students off for lunch. I appreciate everyone's cooperation with this!
- This week we will welcome Lindsey Stover!! She will be helping Mrs. Masters in the library to develop meaningful lessons that will supplement what you all are doing in class.
- I will also begin walk through observations this week! I look forward to seeing all of you in action :)
I ask that you all join me in surrounding the Goshe family in our prayers. They will have a brand new baby girl tomorrow!!! We pray for a safe delivery for mom and baby!
I know I have said this before, but I am so proud to be a part of this team. You all are hardworking teachers and our students are lucky to have you. I am excited to continue to grow as professionals with all of you this year- keep up the good work :)
Grading and Rubrics
The link below contains a great article about assessment and standards based grading. I ask that as you read it you consider what you are assigning your students for homework, putting on tests, and doing in class. I would love to discuss the article with you as well as your point of view in our collaboration meetings. In addition, I ask that general ed teachers are updating gradelock on Thursdays so that students and parents have a clear idea of where they stand in your class .

5 Minutes for Faith
I always love a reminder that sometimes we may feel like we are surrounded by 'darkness' but we still have our own light and it is up to us to keep it shining or succumb to whatever is dimming our light.
