About the Loggerhead Sea Turtle
The Loggerhead sea turtle is an endangered species in North Carolina. The scientific name for Loggerhead sea turtles are Caretta caretta. Although the most common name is Loggerhead. This species is found in the coastal plain region of North Carolina. The Loggerhead sea turtle is endangered because of the loss of nesting habitat and incidents with fishing gear. The loss of nesting habitat is due to human disturbances, coastal development, and predation of nests. The NOAA is trying to protect the sea turtles with incidents in fishing gear by working with shrimp trawl fishing industry and creating a TED which reduces the amount of incidents. The Loggerhead sea turtle is an important species and is working to become not endangered.
