Journey to Jewish Cuba
With the Yiddish Book Center
December 11-18, 2015
The Yiddish Book Center is pleased to announce our second trip to Cuba scheduled for Friday, December 11 to Friday, December 18. Our seven night and eight day program will focus on Havana’s Jewish community, including visits to the most important synagogues, community centers, and other Jewish community sites as well as a full program of art, architecture, music and other cultural highlights of Havana. The group will enjoy the special opportunity of experiencing island life with Cuban-born Professor Behar, who brings an intimate knowledge of the Jewish community and the world of Cuban arts and letters through more than twenty years of return visits and engagement with her compatriots.
Along with your full -time religious program, you will visit architectural sites, artist studios, museums and galleries and have expert discussions regarding the city’s cultural and religious history and contemporary art with gifted Havana artists and scholars. Your trip will start in Miami and you will fly to and return from Havana. You will be housed in a high-quality five-star hotel in Havana. There will be a full-time Cuban Guide, and you will have luxury transportation throughout the trip. The trip will include 17 meals total, daily breakfast at the hotel and a variety of lunches and dinners. Meals will be at a combination of the best government restaurants, the most exciting private Paladares, religious centers, and artist studios. There will be free time for dining on your own and for exploring the city.
We have selected Cuba Tours and Travel, a very experienced Cuba tour operator that is primarily devoted to assisting travel license holders. To accommodate your visit, we will be providing letters of travel from the Yiddish Book Center, a Jewish community organization, for the purposes of using a General Religious license No.515.560(c) for your trip. This trip fully complies with all U.S. laws governing American travel to Cuba.
It's now easier to visit Cuba
On January 16, 2015 President Obama liberalized People to People educational travel, which now allows Americans to travel to Cuba without all of the paperwork previously needed. This makes travel to Cuba infinitely easier. People to People travel is not tourist oriented or self directed but it is both rewarding and unique. It allows participants to visit a wide scope of organizations, institutions, and community projects that provide a deeper understanding of Cuba, its people and its culture. This PVAC trip includes a full time schedule of educational exchange activities designed to promote meaningful interactions between Americans and the people of Cuba.
The trip will be organized and led by Ruth Behar, a cultural anthropologist and writer, who has worked to create bridges to Cuba for the last twenty-four years. She is the editor of the pioneering anthology, Bridges to Cuba, and author of An Island Called Home and Traveling Heavy. Her editorials on Cuba have appeared in the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post, and the Huffington Post.
