The Falcon
Fieldstone Middle School * June 1, 2018
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I hope that the end of the year is going well for all of you and that your families are enjoying the many events that this busy time of year brings.
This past month has brought a number of opportunities during which our students' talents have been celebrated. Through the school musical and talent show, the performing arts have been highlighted. We are looking forward to our spring concert and art show on Wednesday, June 6th, and hope that you can join us at 6:00 PM when students' art work will be available for viewing. The concert will begin at 7:30. Please click here to view the flyer related to this evening of the arts.
Just a reminder that Tuesday, June 5th will be a single session day and students will be dismissed at 12:55. Buses will be provided. Grade level team leaders have reached out to schedule conferences as needed.
Please see below for additional topics of interest and the many reasons why it's great to be a Falcon. As always, if I can be of assistance to you or your family, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.
All the best,
Gina McCormack
Big, the Musical
Our school community enjoyed two performances of Big, The Musical. This production was a collaborative effort by a number of very committed and talented individuals, including of course, our students. Ms. Austin took on the all encompassing role of supervising each and every detail, and Ms. McCann supported the set design.
Very special thanks are due to a group of Pascack Hills High School students who a year ago proposed a venture through which they would collaboratively direct and produce the middle school play. They exceeded expectations by pouring their energy, focus, and talents into supporting our cast and crew to produce a highly entertaining and creative production. Thank you to Ellie Falanga, Lauren Goldman, Angelica Grubic, Grady Johnson, Julianna Koetter, Grace Liriano, Alex Moss, and Frank Scott for their support of our program.
FMS Talent Show
The 14 featured performances included piano players, singers, dancers, rock stars, rollerbladers, and a Rubik's cube master. Thanks to Mr. Scherer, the teaching staff who supervised, and to all of our talented participants.
Athletics Update
The Falcon Baseball squad brought energy and excitement into each game. They ended the year on a high note beating the #2 seed Upper Saddle River 11-6.
Our Softball team enjoyed a season of opportunities as students from grades 5-8 contributed all over the field. We are excited to see what this young group holds for the future!
The FMS Track team sprinted to a successful finish at the Annual League Meet. Our students achieved personal bests as our group of 80 became a team of 1.
A special thanks to following eighth grade student athletes for their great leadership and positive attitudes:
Kevin Scully, Billy Mulholland, Angelo Celli, Ethan Brown, Ryan Baudisch, James Hernandez, Jeffrey Wang, Tim Sneath, Nicholas Giannantonio, Ryan Giammanco, Casey Funesti, Isabella Taglieri, Lauren Wittekind, Joseph Parodi, Colin Mallon, Zach Duck, Connor Hughes, George Geanopulos, Katie Yoo, Riley Hughes, Julia Ang, Rachel Schulman, Ally Green, Aaron Solomon, Harrison Stein, Kathryn Wrynn, Lina Kim, Daniel Song, Ben Levin, Chris Culnen, Sarah Park, Nikki Longo, Kelly Quinn, Alan Zhang, Dream Maywether, Ethan Dontas, Ricky Kanai, Maggie Chua, Jordan Kass, Sarah Kelly, Kira Quigley, Mihir Wadhwa, Saieesh Bairam, Dennis Khanutin, Kai Hamazaki, David Hong, Connor Aherne, Andrew Baskin, and Shane Jensen.
Students are reminded that in order to participate in fall athletics, they must have an updated physical completed before returning to school. Please do not wait until the last minute to make appointments, as physicians' appointments will be filled at the end of the summer. Students will not be permitted to attend fall tryouts unless they have a current physical on file.

Sixth Grade D.A.R.E. Graduation
As a graduation requirement, the sixth graders were asked to write an essay describing what they have learned from the D.A.R.E. program. The essays are often narratives of personal experiences of bullying or peer pressure and explain how the students will use or have used the D.A.R.E. Decision Making Model to overcome those challenges. Officer Cruise has encouraged students to continue to apply the skills they learned in D.A.R.E. in their daily lives.
Students enjoyed a trip to Boulders Stadium later that evening. Thank you to Officer Cruise for providing his expertise and support of this program.

Book Fair
The PTO sponsored an end-of-year, “buy one, get one free” book fair during the week of May 14th. Students attended during their language arts periods and had the opportunity to stock up on summer reading selections. Thank you to Ms. Tammy King and the all of the dedicated volunteers who made this opportunity possible for our students.

Eighth Grade Trip to Washington D.C.
Our eighth graders had a wonderful trip to Washington D.C. Students and chaperones alike enjoyed visiting the monuments, Arlington National Cemetery, and the Smithsonian Institute Museums. Adding to the fun, evening activities included a dance party at the hotel. Students were engaged throughout the entire trip, and all adults were impressed by their background knowledge of history as well as the respectful manner by which they conducted themselves.

Are you looking for something productive for your child to do this summer?
Are you looking for a way to improve your child's performance and help them hit the ground running next school year?
Well, we have great news...
Registration for the 2018 Montvale Summer Institute is STILL OPEN!
For the first time this year, we are revamping our approach to summer learning for the middle school. Middle school students will be offered a "Summer Boot Camp" with a more concentrated curriculum, focused on preparing students for the upcoming school year.
IMPORTANT: One very important feature of the Boot Camp, if not a critical one, is our instructors. Providing courses instructed by certified teachers/ staff members, who have a working knowledge of the students, curriculum, and summer learning essentials, is what sets MSI apart. It is due to this, that we have to change our original dates of July 23rd - July 27th to July 30th - August 3rd.
We are hoping to get the numbers needed to run each section, as this is a new endeavor. Please do not delay if you are interested, reach out and ask any question you may have or register now! We would like to make decisions by June 15th. If enrollment is too low, we may have to cancel courses.
Please visit our website ( montvalesi.wix.com/montvalesummer ) to register and/or find information for all MSI courses, answers to frequently asked questions, contacts, and everything else.
Hope to see you there!
