Dedication at Its Finest...

As you probably heard, the SHARP cheer competition that was supposed to take place last week was suddenly cancelled at the last minute. In order to lift the spirits of our Lady Eagles, Ms. J. and Ms. McCarthy took to the stage, doing their own routine to entertain the girls. Check it out here. (Let me know if the link does't work...if it doesn't bring a smile to your face, I'm not sure what will.)

The big day is finally here! MS Teachers, a few reminders:

1) Computers - Before school begins tomorrow, please make sure you have your cart ready to go and that there are enough computers present to test your entire class.

2) Login Cards - Please have them ready before-hand.

3) Administration Guideline - Please remember to have the script handy and use it when administering the assessment.

4) Support - We will all be here for extra support should you have an issue.

5) Special Supports for Students - If students are being pulled, or need questions read aloud, remember they may be testing at a different time. During your class assessment, these students may sit quietly and read, or be sent to a partner classroom that isn't testing. Stay tuned for a schedule of pull-outs from the SPED dept.

6) Math Administration - If you are administering math, makes sure to have scratch paper provided.

7) Snacks - You will each receive snacks for your students in case they missed breakfast and/or need a pick-me-up. It's up to you when you'd like them to have it.

8) Motivation - Remember that student motivation/confidence is a key factor in student success on the assessment. A couple ideas:

  • Test Dedication - Have your students think of a person they are "dedicating" their test to. If there's time, you can even have them draft a letter.
  • Testing chant before getting started -- I used to have my students chant "We will do our very best, we are going to ROCK this test!"

9) Breaks -- Remind your students to take frequent breaks from looking at the screen (looking up at the ceiling is a good practice) AND to watch their posture during the assessment.

10) Please remember to circulate during the test (though it may be tempting to sit down). Circulating reminds students that you are taking it seriously and that they should too.

National Physical Fitness and Sports Month

Did you know that May has been declared National Physical Fitness and Sports Month? Feel free to find time to celebrate by taking your classes out for an extra game of kick-ball, soccer or some other physical activity. Not only does it help bring your students together, but does it in a healthy, exciting way!

Parent Appreciation - Open House - May 26

It's been on the calendar for a while but I wanted to bring it to your attention that coming up in a couple weeks is our Parent Appreciation/Open House Event. This is an opportunity for families to stop in and check out the work that your students have been doing this year. Typically the evening begins with a dinner to show our families appreciation. Teachers do the serving and parents do the eating. Shortly after, families are escorted to their child's classroom to check out the room and learn about anything you'd like students to share with the family. The event is student led and free-flowing (meaning no specific presentation from the teacher is expected). We are working on what the details for the TK-2 site will look like. Please stay tuned for more details on that. Also, sorry 6th grade, you'll be in Pali so we understand that you will not be able to participate! )o:

We also realize that testing will have just been completed so some of the work displayed may be a few weeks old. This is A-OK! We will discuss some other ideas of how to set up the classroom at our meeting this weekend.

Data Talks Cancelled

There will be no data talks this week due to testing.

LCAP Feedback

If you did not get a chance to complete the survey last week (either hard-copy) or online, now's your chance! Remember this is your opportunity to share any ideas (both big and small) that you believe could enhance our school. Don't let it get away!

Word of the Week

(n.) the condition of being physically fit and healthy

Instructional Focus - 2.2B - Response to Behavior

Same as last week....Have we had a chance to channel our inner "Chick?" For those of you who attended the Restorative Discipline PD, you know exactly what I am talking about. For those who did not, I am referring to the way we approach challenging situations with students. Are we approaching them with empathy while also holding them accountable? Are we working on building relationships and upping the odds of students making good choices on their own?
