PATRIOT PRESS
PLEASANT VALLEY MIDDLE SCHOOL * * * May 30, 2021
Welcome to another edition of our Patriot Press
Hello Patriot Families,
It is hard to believe that we are down to our last few weeks of the school year. Our students have been doing a great job here at school. It is not easy to follow all of the expectations, especially for this age of students, but they are working hard. We thank you all for your continued support.
We hope you really enjoy your long weekend. We look forward to seeing you again on Tuesday.
Go PVM!
Mr. Maloney
Principal
Dear Families,.
As the year draws to a close, I want to thank you all for your partnership this year. We asked for your help with school this year in unprecedented ways. We know and understand the challenges that many families faced during the last year.
We are so grateful to have had the last few months with your children. It has restored hope, provided a solid routine, and allowed us to make connections with our students. I have appreciated the feedback and communication from those of you that had concerns or needs this year. Your voices are important to us and I look forward to a new year of partnerships.
Our 8th graders will be moving on to high school and, although we will miss them, we are so excited to see what they can do as their future unfolds. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of their educational journey.
Have an excellent week,
Anna Leeper
Assistant Principal

Notes from the Nurse - important end-of-year information
Dear students and families.
I want to take the opportunity to remind you of some end of the year activities--which (some) may look more like the beginning of next year activities, but they are important and I want you to be able to get started on them.
- If your child has a life-threatening condition such as asthma, seizures, diabetes, heart conditions, etc, please make certain that we in Health Services are aware--Please UPDATE the HEALTH section of Skyward for 2022, this is supposed to happen every year
- If Health Services are already aware of life-threatening conditions, you will likely be receiving a packet to update important information such as Emergency Action Plans and medication in school forms
- If your student requires medications at school (Epinephrine, inhalers or other medications) please make certain that you are planning for those for the start of next year (medication in school form completed by parent/guardian and provider, medication ready for school in the fall in a pharmacy labeled container, unexpired) and remember that parent/guardian needs to deliver the medication and sign it in with a staff member.
- If your student is going to be entering 7th grade, remember that a Tdap (immunization) is required for attendance
- ALL students must be in compliance with required vaccines in order to start school ( this means record of having received the vaccine or in certain circumstances Conditions of Exemption forms completed)
- Lastly, we would like all medications that we have for your child currently at school be picked up by the end of the school day on the last day of school (6/15). IF you are unable to pick them up that day please email boldt.nancy@battlegroundps.org so arrangements can be made for you to pick them up.
We don't know what next year is going to look like, but I encourage you to watch the Battle Ground Public Schools website and your emails for updates as we get closer to school starting the 21-22 School Year.
Please enjoy summer and I look forward to seeing everyone next year!!
Sincerely,
Nancy Boldt, BSN, RN
School Nurse
Summer at-home extended learning opportunities

Fall Enrollment - Changes in Remote Learning Availability
Now is the time to look ahead to next school year and let us know if you plan to change your students' learning program for 2021-22. Please be aware that remote learning will not be offered by neighborhood schools. If your family would like to enroll in a different program or neighborhood school in the fall, now is the time to enroll. Families who plan to return in the fall also should enroll now. Committing now to your school or program helps the district ensure we will have enough staff to support students at each school and grade level, as the vast majority of teaching staff are hired in the spring.
What you need to know about 2021-22
- All neighborhood schools will be on a traditional, five-day in-person learning model.
- Remote learning will not be offered by neighborhood schools. If your student is a remote learner at a neighborhood school, they will automatically be enrolled in five-day, in-person learning unless parents enroll them in an alternative program.
- Families who want to continue with a full remote or hybrid learning option are encouraged to enroll now in one of Battle Ground's Alternative Learning Experience (ALE) schools: River HomeLink, River Online Learning, or Summit View High School.
- At this time, the district does not have information about what health and safety protocols (for example, masks) will be required in the fall for in-person learning. The district is following health and safety requirements for in-person learning as directed by the state Department of Health, and will update its protocols as directed.
Returning to neighborhood schools
Students currently attending an alternative program within the district can return to their neighborhood school in the fall by calling the school directly at this time. Contact information for each school is on the district website.
Returning students who are not currently enrolled in a Battle Ground school and students who are new to the district need to enroll online through Skyward (Family Access). Information about enrolling new students is on the district website at battlegroundps.org/enroll.
If you would like to attend a school or program in the fall that you are not currently attending, please enroll now with that school for 2021-22. Students who want to continue with their current program do not need to do anything; however, if you are in a remote program at your neighborhood school and want to stay in a remote learning model, you will need to choose an alternative program such as River Online Learning.
We encourage families to make this decision as soon as possible so we can plan for staffing and have enough teachers to support students at each grade level and school.
Thank you
Important - Updating Ethnicity/Race Information in Skyward. Please update this information now.
The federal government recently expanded the categories for student ethnicity and race to more accurately reflect individuals' backgrounds, and is requiring school districts to update its reports. To comply with this requirement, we are asking families to log in to Skyward Family Access and update their child's race/ethnicity information. There are now 222 ethnicity/race categories for families to choose from, and parents can choose more than one race for their child.
Why do we need this information? New laws require school districts to report this information to the state and federal government. While every school district in Washington will be reporting this information, the data will NOT be reported with the names of individual students. The data is sent in numbers only, with no student names attached. The information will be used along with census information to determine funding for schools and educational programs and services for all students.
Please log in to Skyward Family Access at your convenience and update your child's information. (Instructions are available online.) If you have any questions, please contact your school for assistance.
If you are experiencing difficulties updating this information, please call the school office for assistance. We must update all student information in April.
Out of District Boundary Exception Requests
Students who wish to transfer out of the Battle Ground School District need to fill out the Choice Transfer Form and then return it electronically.
Students who live outside Battle Ground Public Schools boundaries and wish to transfer to a school within the district need to begin the process at their resident district.
Application forms for out-of-district student transfers will be accepted starting at 7 a.m. on May 3 for the following school year. Please email your completed and signed forms to boundaries@battlegroundps.org on or after 7 a.m. on May 3, 2021 and they will be processed in the order in which they are received. You may request that a transfer form be mailed to you by emailing the boundaries office.
Current Battle Ground students who live outside the district boundaries may submit a Letter of Intent to attend a Battle Ground school beginning Jan. 11, but must still submit a Choice Transfer form to the student’s home district on May 3.
Counselor's Corner
Hello Pleasant Valley Middle School Families,
Social-Emotional Supports
There are great resources available for social-emotional support via the Battle Ground Public Schools website. On the district page there are links that lead you to more information for different topics. Here is the link to our school district's page: Social Emotional Supports
NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is also a great resource: NAMI
SOS Supports information
During this challenging year, school staff are working to teach students about mental health and how to seek help if they are worried about themselves or a friend. We continue to use a program called SOS Signs of Suicide for 7th and 8th grade students. The program teaches students about this difficult topic and encourages them to seek help.
SOS has been used by thousands of schools over the past few decades. Studies have shown that it effectively teaches students about depression and suicide while reducing the number of students’ self-reported suicide attempts.

Mrs. McCann's Google Classroom.
I will be sharing topics weekly in my Google classroom. Please remind your students to join my Google classroom if they have not done so already. Links were emailed to them at the beginning of the school year to join.
Family and Community Resource Center
Battle Ground Public Schools’ Family and Community Resource Center (FCRC) helps meet the needs of families faced with housing instability and similar economic challenges.
While a main goal of the FCRC is to assist families experiencing housing instability, it can also help connect families with many other types of resources and is intended to respond to the changing needs of the community.
The FCRC is a continuation of the district’s joint efforts with the Battle Ground Education Foundation, an all-volunteer, nonprofit community organization whose purpose is to leverage community resources to help maintain quality education for all students in Battle Ground schools.
The Family Resource Guide is full of contacts to aid families in connecting with agencies who are able to help with a great variety of needs. Please click the link below to view this helpful guide.
