Brentwood Elementary Mission Statement
~Achievement~Actions~Attitudes~
Greetings Parents:
Thank you for your patience as well move into the second semester. Thus far the semester has started wet and cold. We will begin taking students outside for recess starting Monday, January 25 if weather and temperatures permit. We will be sending students outside if the raw temperature is 20 degrees or higher. If there is a higher temperature and the wind chill factor is lower than 20 degrees, students will stay inside. Students will be carefully monitored at recess and kept inside should any safety concerns arise. Again, recess is always dependent on the weather.
We had a great Excellence Convocation Tuesday, look for the pictures later in the newsletter scroll. We also celebrated the one hundredth day of school this week with activities all over school celebrating “100 days of being smarter.”
We are looking forward to the Battle of the Books as our teams begin their competition next week. This is going to be an exciting experience for our upper grade students who accepted the challenge. We are looking forward to the final battle of the books Friday, January 29th at Clarks Creek.

Students of the Week
Staff MVP of the Week ~ Mrs. Yisette Reyes, Instructional Assistant
Our staff Most Valuable Player is Special Education Instructional Assistant, Mrs. Yisette Reyes. Mrs. Reyes has been an IA at Brentwood since September and previously worked as an IA/Communication Assistant for deaf students and students with special needs for one and a half years. Before that she was a nurse for 8 years. (This tied into her childhood dream of being a doctor!)
Autism Specialist, Mrs. Danielle Shepherd had the following to say about working with Mrs. Reyes, "She is kind hearted, creative, willing to go the extra mile for the students."
Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Rogers added: "
I absolutely agree with Danielle. I would add that she is calm/calming to the children. She is willing to help in any way."
Mrs. Reyes has been married for nine years and has two children, her son is 8 years old and her daughter is 6 years old. They both attend Clarks Creek Elementary School. Mrs. Reyes has one older brother and two younger sisters!
Some of Mrs. Reyes' Favorites:
Color ~ Blue
Book ~ Little Women (as a kid) ~ Now: The Bible
Sports ~ Gymnastics
Music ~ Messianic music
Food ~ Chinese food
When she isn't working, Mrs. Reyes enjoys going to church and practicing Israeli dances. She cites Tole, Panama as the most interesting place she has been.
"In this place I had the privilege to meet people that although they didn't have many resources they were willing to share the little they had and that although the kids had to walk more than an hour to get to school they appreciate the value of learning."
A student moment she remembers fondly is: "During a sensory break one of my students told me: 'Mrs Reyes, Do you know why I love you? I love you because I can play blocks with you'".
Some aspirations Mrs. Reyes has are diving and to get to work with Doctors without Borders.
Advice for parents of elementary aged children: "My advice to parents is to use their children's interests to teach or review school work and also to take the time to strengthen their communication with them by asking questions about how was their day at school."
1st grade teacher, Mrs. Sullivan says, "Yisette is very kind and helpful. She is patient with the students and always cheerful! We are lucky to have her here at Brentwood"
3rd Grade Music Program
The students should arrive at 6:00 and report to their classroom. Parents and guests can head to the cafeteria.
Mrs. Goodin will send additional information to classroom teacher on Monday with additional information for parents.

Value Student of the Month ~ December
Kindness
Respect for Others' Rights ~ Connor Burress, 4th Grade
Mrs. Shepherd wrote, "I believe Connor exemplifies the value of kindness because we have had several new students at Brentwood start in the middle of the year. Connor has shown kindness to these new students by eating with them at lunch, playing with them at recess, and showing them around Brentwood. Connor has also shown kindness to students who have recently started in the ELL program. Even though there is a language barrier, Connor tries his best to communicate and help. I am proud of the person Connor is and proud to have him represent Brentwood as our ambassador. Way to go Connor!"

After-School 500 Festival Kidsfit Running Program (4th & 5th Grades ONLY)
Our next AFTER-SCHOOL activity club will be a Running Club. Mrs. Edwards, 2nd grade teacher, and Mrs. Eakes, Physical Education teacher are leading this club. This club is sponsored by the 500 Festival as a children's training program for the 5K (3.1 mile distance) at the 500 Festival Mini Marathon on May 7, 2016. Participation in the 5K is optional and will require parents to provide transportation and attend the event with their child. If you join the club more information concerning the 500 Festival 5K Run will be provided. There is a ONE WEEK commitment to this club if you sign up. Everyone's goal is to be active 60 minutes every day. This club can provide some of those minutes.
The Running Club will take place on Wednesdays from 3:45 until 4:30 p.m. after school. Students will stay at school until parent pick up time at 4:30. Parents will need to park outside the gym doors (door #5) to pick children up at 4:30 p.m. Students who are walkers may walk home with parent permission at 4:30. If you are unable to pick up your child promptly at 4:30 please do not sign your child up for this activity.
This club will begin Wednesday, February 17, 2016. Running Club Dates:

- March 2
- March 9

All permission forms are due by Wednesday, February 1, 2016.
This club is for students who have a committed desire to learn and train for long distance running (5K). Students will be participating in various intense physical fitness activities each week. Students are not required to participate in the 500 Festival 5K Run. You do not need to be a good runner already, but you must want to train and learn to become a good runner. We expect all club members to demonstrate good sportsmanship and follow the physical education excellence rules at all times. Any student being disruptive or inappropriate will not be allowed to return. If this occurs the student's parents will be notified.

Transportation Arrival & Dismissal Info
All car riders arriving in the morning should be dropped off in our car rider lane NOT in our Visitor Parking lot. This ensures they are not crossing over any traffic.
Late Arrivals:
If you child is being dropped off late an adult must come into the office and sign them in.
Student Arrivals (bus riders):
If your child rides the bus to school and will be eating breakfast in the cafeteria please talk to them about going straight to the cafeteria to get their breakfast. This will give them the most time to eat as healthy of a breakfast as possible.Dismissal Changes:
- If you need to change your child's dismissal instructions the best way to do this is to send a signed note to your child's teacher.
- If this is impossible please call the office NO LATER THAN 2:30 p.m. to ensure the dismissal change gets to your child's teacher in a timely matter.

If you are permanently changing how your child goes home or if you move please notify our office at 317-839-4802, as well as Transportation at 317-838-3632, and submit a new Transportation Form to the office.
