Hendricks High School Happenings
April 10-April 21, 2017
English
11/12: We are reading an awesome muckraker novel, The Jungle, that is all about the struggles of the working poor in the early 1900’s.
9/10: Students are finishing up The Autobiography of Malcolm X and are writing academic summaries of a chapter of their choice. Next we will be moving onto the horror story genre.
7/8: We are reading The Red Badge of Courage together and focusing on the use of metaphors, similes, and other figurative language to create depth of meaning and description.
Video Production: Students are working on their final project of the year. A short movie that was entirely scripted, acted, and edited by themselves.
Mythology: We are learning about Greek heroes. Right now they are making a puppet show that explains why Theseus can be considered an Epic Hero.
Social Studies
It has and will be a busy last couple of weeks in social studies. Students in MN Studies completed their famous Minnesotan projects, and will be assigned a chapter of the text to summarize and complete a fun project on for the last weeks of school. In Economics, students are exploring key aspects and concepts of macroeconomics, and the causes behind the 2008 economic recession. In Human Geography, students have been assigned their final project, which brings together all the important concepts from the past year and will put them into practice when they complete their assigned East Asian country. In Global Studies, students are exploring East Asian pop culture, and the differences and similarities between Western pop culture. Lastly, American Studies will study the Constitution, and run a mock debate.
Thanks for reading,
Mr. Thoresen
Science
The fifth graders have been researching the monarch butterfly decline and growing plants for our very own butterfly garden.
The sixth graders are experimenting with magnets, trying to find factors that affect magnetic fields.
The earth science class is learning about water resources, including aquifers, artesian wells, and local watersheds. We are gearing up for our big field trip to the Badlands of South Dakota to learn the geology of these beautiful landforms.
The physical science class is using an online simulation to build and test electrical circuits.
Chemistry is finishing the unit on chemical calculations (who knew science could get so math-y?)
We look forward to finishing this school year in a strong fashion!
