Attention 5th Grade Parents
Course selection is now open for 6th grade. Middle school counselors have visited each elementary campus and your student has a course selection sheet. Please take some time to talk with your student about courses of interest for the 21-22 school year. While students and parents are not able to visit the middle school campuses at this time, you may find this document helpful for information and resources pertaining to course selection, including contact information of each middle school counselor. This is an exciting time for your student and our middle school administrative teams are available to answer any questions you may have.

Gifted and Talented Referrals for Spring 2021
Midlothian ISD provides a program for students in K-12 who have been identified as exceptionally able. The Gifted and Talented Program at all levels is designed to provide opportunities to meet unique social, emotional, and intellectual needs of gifted and talented students. Referrals for the Gifted and Talented Program may be made by parents, teachers, students, counselors, or community members. Once assessments are complete, parents will be notified in writing of results.
Parents may request a referral packet by contacting your child’s teacher or school counselor. If you have questions regarding referral or testing for the GT program, please contact your child’s counselor.

COVID Reminders
Attendance Expectations
Expectations for Face-to-Face Learners
F2F students are required to be at school in person to receive attendance credit.
Students who participate in face to face instruction may only join virtual instruction if they have chosen to become Virtual Learners for the grading period or if the student is working from home under COVID quarantine protocols.
Expectations for Virtual Learners
Virtual learners are the only students eligible for virtual instruction and remote asynchronous attendance.
Virtual learners are expected to connect with their teacher and complete assignments every day.
Whether your child is a Face-to-Face or Virtual Learner, school days missed will count as standard absences and must follow attendance procedures set forth in the elementary handbook (pp. 29-31).
We thank you in advance for your understanding as we create the best learning environment for each of our students. If you have any questions, please reach out to me at shannon_west@misd.gs.

Required COVID-19 Screener
Similar to other illnesses or viruses your student may experience, parents are our first line of defense to prevent the spread of COVID-19. We ask that you proactively screen your student daily to ensure they are not experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms. If your student is experiencing any of the following symptoms, we ask that you opt for remote learning until your child is able to return to school. Additionally, we ask parents to immediately report to your student’s campus if your child has the following symptoms or has tested positive. The following symptoms include:
- Feeling feverish with a temperature greater than 100
- Loss of taste or smell
- Cough
- Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
- Fatigue or severe headache
- Chills
- Sore throat, congestion or runny nose
- Shaking or exaggerated shivering
- Significant muscle pain or ache
- Diarrhea nausea or vomiting
It is extremely important for parents to provide the campus nurse with any and all medical records, including seasonal or chronic allergy, gastrointestinal issues, etc. Screening should be for new and/or a change in symptoms from the baseline. If a student has some of these symptoms long term and the record of that is on campus with the nurse, that would be considered a symptom for the medical issue other than COVID as documented on campus with the nurse. Parents must communicate thoroughly with the campus nurse.
For students returning to school, students may return to school when your student has been:
- fever-fee for 24 hours, and symptoms have improved, or
- 10 days have passed since symptoms first appeared,
- or received one negative COVID-19 test,
- or have a doctor’s note allowing your student to return to school

Health and Safety Protocol
Our campus is continuing to be vigilant with all of our health and safety protocols and we need your partnership in these efforts. If your child is sick, experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 or is waiting on results from a COVID-19 test, your child must stay home from school.
Below are the conditions for returning to school after an individual shows symptoms or gets a positive COVID-19 test result.
Either:
24 hours with no fever; and
Symptoms improved; and
10 days have passed since symptoms first appeared
Or:
Obtain 1 negative COVID-19 test result from a physician’s office, approved testing location or other site. https://tdem.texas.gov/covid-19/
Or:
A doctor’s note indicating an alternate diagnosis; and
Must check-in with the campus nurse before returning to class.
We thank you for your partnership and understanding as we keep the health and safety of our students, teachers and staff members our top priority.
