Muraski TEAM Memo
For the Week of November 5th
This is My TEAM!
Thank you to Everyone Who Donated Candy or Time!
Thank you so much to those of you who donated candy and/or volunteered your time last night! I just received an email from Jenni Pelko that we tripled our attendees from last year... we had over 1,000 kids! We were also able to donate over $300 and a busload of food to the Strongsville Food Bank!
Things to do this week...
1. Review and add additional information based upon what was shared with your TEAM.
2. List your lagging skill with your data to explain how you know.
3. After 11/12/18 you will hear from the Math Committee to help support your TEAM with strategies/interventions to move forward with.
4. Run a 5 step process form.
2. TBT Work to support our BLT focus
Please make sure that you have a 5 step form started on the topic of writing by the end of November. We will have all had the additional PD training with Lori Wilfong, and as a continued building wide focus, our BLT will be working on supporting our TBT teams in writing.
3. Please help promote voting at the polls
School Building Staff: Select 9 parents from your class/homeroom and give them a call. All building staff that do not have a class/homeroom should partner up with a classroom teacher and call a different set of 9 parents. You may use district phones, but please call outside of the student day.
Listed below is the script.
- This is ____________________ and I’m calling to remind you that Tuesday, November 6th is election day. Our school district has a new operating levy, Issue 8, on the ballot. We are encouraging everyone to get out and vote on election day.
Since this is a reminder to vote, please try to make calls towards the end of next week and/or on Monday (11/5).
4. Just a reminder (but you may have this done)...When common assessments are complete; please make sure you fill in your data here. (Muraski - CA Data Sheet)
Please review and update your calendar on the changes in Lexia PD time...Thank you!

Our TEAM is really working to find Solutions to Barriers in our classroom. Check it out and maybe take their idea and implement it in your own classroom too!
Kelly (Grade 2)
Barrier: Math concepts being too difficult for some students
Solution: Guided Math groups have really helped. I have been introducing the topic to my students who are struggling. We work through example problems together on the board and I do not have them follow along in their math books. Once we have done examples and the concept is done being taught, I then try to have them complete some workbook problems on their own. These are problems we already did together on the board as examples. Another thing I have started to do with my math groups is to keep some students struggling with the concept for two rotations. They start with me and the topic is introduced and then they stay for the next rotation to learn the lesson again.
Chelsea (Grade 3)
Barrier: Newspaper/Magazine
Why it’s a barrier in my classroom:
-small text
-text hard to decode
-text comprehension challenges
-text requires more background
-text with difficult vocab
I have never used a newspaper like Studies Weekly or magazine like StoryWorks Jr. in my classroom as instructional material. I really do enjoy using these abs it has helped my teaching to reach out into new areas and categories.
Solution:
The small text can be viewed larger on the online version, students can use that or view the text on the SmartBoard as we use it in class during reading aloud for Reading and Social Studies
-Audio versions and teacher read aloud are both used in my room in these subjects for the materials, students enjoy hearing myself and others on audio read to them with new inflection and expression- this also helps with better comprehension
-We also do partner and small group aloud reading with these materials which helps students slow down and read to peers-this also helps with their fluency
-Both of these materials are complete with online components that’s take the topic one step farther with videos and more information to expand background knowledge for understanding and comprehension
-For both materials in the classroom we also preview the vocabulary before reading sections- we use notes, online slide presentations, interactive notebooks...
-Teacher read alouds with these materials so help by allowing time to stop, talk about difficult concepts student might not have previous information on, and starts discussions about text to self relationships students have with these difficult concepts
Denise (Guidance)
I break down barriers by having a large picture of the story for my guidance lesson put on the white board. Usually there is just a small poster I hold up. This allows all students no matter where they are seated to see the visual. I also plan to pass out song lyrics for the videos I show so that students can see the words as they watch the video if they want.
