Butterflies Fly South
Our class found 5 Monarch caterpillars. They hatched. We named them Speedy, Lucky, Tiny, Manly and Jingle. We put them in a garden near the playground. They're free now and on their way south!

The Three Sisters
Mrs. Smith’s fourth grade students visited The Cambridge Community Garden where they harvested the three sisters – corn, beans, and squash. They learned how the crops complement and benefit from each another by using the companion planting technique.
New Item in the Cafeteria!
Our new Humus Lunch Pack contains 2 oz. humus, a 1 oz. cheese stick, some pretzels, and fresh veggies. Make it a lunch, or you can purchase just the pack for $1.60. Bon Appetit!
The Ag Club
The Ag Club (Grades 3 - 6) has been learning about how apples grow, the difference in taste, and how to test an apple for ripeness.

Adventures at Hildene
First, we went to Hildene. Next, we went to learn about
apple cider. Then, we had lunch. Next, we learned
about monarchs. They tag the butterflies and the
butterflies fly away. Last, we went on the bus and
came back.

First, we went to learn about apple cider. Next, we made
some apple cider to drink. We drank the one that the
other children made. Then, we got to learn about butterflies.
Last, we go to tag the butterfly. And last but not least,
we went back to school.

CCS Stands for Kindness!
Mr. Gibson came to visit Mrs Record's First Grade students to ready a story, "Giraffes Can't Dance, " and to talk about how to be a kind friend. We made a poster about ways to follow positive school rules, and we did a little fun dancing together. CCS students are kind friends!
Summary of Thank You, Mr. Falker
By Philip Nichols, 5th Grade, Mrs. McKeighan's Class
Tricia always wanted to read. When her brother came home with textbooks she always liked when her brother read it to her. Then she got to go to Kindergarten, but she didn’t get to read. When she drew pictures, kid crowded around her to watch her draw.
When she got to first grade, she was handed a reading assignment. She was super excited. When the teacher called on her to read, the words got jumbled and she couldn’t read them. The teacher called on another kid. Every time she tried to read the words, they got jumbled. Kids started teasing her, “Look it's the girl who can’t read!” hahahahahaha, kids laughed. She felt upset. One day she and her grandmother took a walk. “Grandma, am I dumb?” She asked.
“No you are not,” Her grandma said. “You are a brilliant child.” Then she had to move from Michigan to California where her mother got a new job.
When she went to school she hoped kids wouldn't know that she couldn’t read. She went to her fifth grade classroom. There was a new teacher. His name was Mr. Falker. He was nice and fair. When he called on her to answer the question, she got it wrong. Then the whole class started laughing. Then the teacher said “How would you like it if the class laughed at YOU!”. The class went silent. “That's what I thought.” he said.
When it was recess time a kid named Eric said “You can’t read!!” then he tugged her hair. For a long time he bullied her until he was caught and Eric was expelled.
One day after school, the teacher asked her if she wanted to help him erase the blackboard.
She said “Sure.” While she was erasing the blackboard the teacher said “Every time I call out a letter or a number write it down on the blackboard. At the end the blackboard looked like a big mess.
The next day the teacher Mr. Falker started to help teach her how to read. The reading teacher, Mrs. Plessy, helped too. After several days she learned how to read. She loved the feeling and she never had trouble ever again.

Summary of Thank You, Mr. Falker
By Sadie McMillan, 5th Grade, Mrs. McKeighan's Class
Thank You, Mr.Falker, is a wonderful autobiography by Patricia Polacco. This amazing book is about a girl named Tricia and she loves books. Although she loves books she was little and could not read yet.Tricia finally starts kindergarten when the others could sound out the words she could not. So sadly all of the other kids teased her.
Then Tricia and her grandmother had a talk about Tricia being dumb. Her grandmother said she was not dumb wich gave her some confidents. One of the things they talked about was the stars. They said they were holes in the sky that lead to the heavens. So when they let go of the grass they will go to the other side of the stars. Then Tricia’s grandparents did let go of the grass.
Suddenly Tricia’s Mom got a new job in California. Tricia thought this would be her new start. But like all the rest they found out she could not read and teased her. Tricia started to not like school and pretended to be sick. Then news came that there was a new teacher. When the students started to tease like always he said STOP! He told them not to make fun of her. One kid in her class named Eric continued to tease Tricia. She liked the new teacher he even let her wash the chalkboard which only the best students got to do. Tricia hid under the stairs during recess because she was afraid to go out with the other kids.Eric followed her and found her hiding spot. He started to call her a mole and said she was dumb. Mr.Falker hears Eric and punishes him. Mr.Falker says he will teach her to read.
So he does, he had her write letters and numbers with a sponge on the chalkboard. When they finished he put a book in front of her and she began to read.In the very beginning her grandfather put honey on a book and told her knowledge is sweet like honey and she ate the honey. After that day of learning to read, she repeated her grandfather and said “The honey is sweet like knowledge”. In the end the lesson is to never give up no matter what others say.
Earth Club
Ms. LaPointe & Mrs. Branham
The Earth Club for Grades 2-6 is off to a great start this year. We have made our own reusable grocery bags to help keep the plastic bags out of the landfills. Everyone thought of their own, unique design. We also learned why leaves change color in the fall and about the different kinds of trees. We made bookmarks and leaf rubbings. We also talked about not putting so much of our trash in the landfills. We buried some items in dirt, predicted what will happen to them and will now wait until April to dig them back up to see if our predictions were right! Will they rot away or stay exactly the way they are even after they have been buried for 6 months?! Look for the “Green Team” to be collecting returnable bottles in your classroom soon!
