Upcoming Events & Information for Pleasantdale Families
A Note from the Principal's Office
September 23, 2018
Dear PES Families,
So many great things continue to happen at PES-we are excited for your family to be part of our community!
- Student Council is sponsoring a PJ fundraiser day in support of Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month. Students are asked to donate $1.00 in exchange for wearing their pajamas to school on Wednesday, 9/26. In lieu of a monetary donation, students are invited to make a card for a pediatric cancer patient. All monies raised will be donated to the Palzet Family's Fear?Not! Fist Bumps. Through Fist Bumps, the Palzet family sends care packages to children on the 17th floor of Lurie Children's Hospital. For more information visit http://www.gofundme.com/fear-not-fist-bumps
- White Buffalo Playground construction has resumed! We were excited last week to see progress continue on the new playground. The Park District reports that they are expecting to complete concrete borders this week which will be followed by the poured in place surfacing.
- Preschool Color Week continues at PES. Please see the schedule below and join us as we help our youngest students learn their colors.
- MAP Testing has completed and copies of student reports will be sent home Friday, October 5th.
Curriculum Update
- Writer's Workshop allows our students the opportunity to develop their skills through mini-lessons which are immediately applied in student writing. Students build writing stamina through daily opportunities to write. Lucy Calkins, the author of Units of Study the resource used by D107, identifies The 7 Essentials of Writing Instruction (taken from :
- Writing needs to be taught like any other basic skills with explicit instruction and ample opportunity for practice;
- Students deserve to write for real, to write the kinds of text that they see in the world, and to write for an audience of readers, not just for the teacher's red pen;
- Writers write to put meaning onto the page;
- Children deserve to be explicitly taught how to write-and this includes instruction in spelling and conventions, as well as in the qualities and strategies of good writing;
- Students deserve the opportunity and instruction necessary for them to cycle through the writing process as they write;
- Writers read. For children to write well, they need opportunities to read and hear texts aloud, and to read as insiders, studying what other authors have done that they, too, could try;
- Students deserve clear goals and frequent feedback. (taken from www.unitsofstudy.com)
Our teachers in Pleasantdale D107 have participated in summer training and are receiving ongoing professional development with writing coach, Nawal Qarooni Casiano. This Tuesday Nawal will spend the day working with teams of teachers and modeling best practice, as we work to improve our instruction for students.
