1st Annual Parent Academy

Frontier Schools hosted their 1st Annual Parent Academy on Saturday, September 15th at Frontier School of Innovation Middle School.

The Parent Academy is a FREE, district-wide initiative that strives to directly engage parents in their children’s education by providing the support needed to help their students be successful.

The Parent Academy consisted of a series of educational and inspirational sessions covering a wide variety of topics; including: How to Help Your Child With Math Homework, Conscious Discipline at Home, Helping Your Child Make Healthy Relationship Choices, How to Stay Involved at the Secondary Level, Healthy Eating Habits, Mentoring, College Prep and Financial Aid, STEM High School Activities, and NWEA.

Those who attended received a complimentary breakfast, a Parent Academy t-shirt, a certificate of completion, and a chance to win tickets to the Dinosaur Exhibit at Union Station!

Parent Champions were also recognized at the beginning of the event for their contribution to the benefit of students, teachers and the school during the 2017-18 school year.

Hispanic Potluck at FSI Elementary!

National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated September 15th thru October 15th – recognizing and celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

At FSI Elementary, students recognized Hispanic Heritage Month by hanging colorful and informational posters in their building and with a campus wide potluck! Students and staff brought in festive and delicious dishes for everyone to try!

Back to School Parent Breakfasts

FSE Parent Breakfast

On September 5th, Frontier School of Excellence hosted a Back to School Parent Breakfast. Parents enjoyed breakfast items while interacting with administrators and staff. Parents also received in-depth information about student testing and upcoming school events.

Frontier STEM High School hosted their Red Carpet Parent Breakfast on Thursday, September 6th. Administrators shared Title I program information and they also discussed upcoming school event information.

Campus Activities

Paws for Reading Returns!

Paws for Reading has returned at FSI Elementary with a new companion added to the team – Nala! Emma and Nala provide students with comforting energy in a relaxed environment allowing students to feel at ease while they practice reading aloud. Students look forward to seeing their furry friends each month.

Kindness Club

Kindness Club at FSI Middle started off the school year just right! These students truly love sharing and spreading positivity in every way possible. Students involved in the Kindness Club placed notes of kindness on every students' locker – when students arrived the next morning they were greeted with a flood of positive notes for everyone to appreciate and enjoy!

Bi-Annual Fall Blood Drive at FSHS

On September 26th, Frontier STEM High School hosted their 4th Bi-Annual Fall Blood Drive –partnering with the American Red Cross. The blood drive took place in the school's gymnasium and was open to students, staff, family, friends, and community members. The blood drive collected 38 units of blood – potentially saving 114 lives! Thank you to everyone who came out and donated!

We hope to see you again at our Spring Blood Drive on May 9, 2019!

FSE & FSHS Enrolled in Missouri Southern State University

Students from Frontier STEM High School and Frontier School of Excellence are currently enrolled in dual credit online courses with Missouri Southern State University (MSSU). This is a great opportunity for students to academically challenge themselves, while earning college credits.

Family Night at FSI Elementary

FSI Elementary hosted their first Family Night of the year on September 25th! The theme of the night was Hispanic Heritage and each activity incorporated ways for students to openly discuss their heritage with family members and fellow classmates. An educational opportunity for students, family, and staff to learn more about each others cultures and backgrounds.

A Top Contender for KC Regional Teacher of the Year

Mrs. Amirah Pughsley, Intervention Specialist at FSI Middle was named as one of the Top 10 Missouri Regional Teachers of the Year by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) for the 2018-19 school year!

Mrs. Pughsley was also recently named District Teacher of the Year by Frontier Schools for the 2017-18 school year. With this recognition, Mrs. Pughsley said she feels a tremendous amount of support and honor from fellow teachers and administrative staff. She is currently working to bring new programs into the school, such as a Junior Honor Society – all while creating more opportunities for student recognition and college preparation and readiness.

"This recognition has given me the inspiration to continue to develop professionally as a teacher and a leader. I want to create stronger partnerships between home and school with families, and I hope to encourage my peers to be ambassadors for Frontier Schools and to take more interest in educational issues," expressed Amirah Pughsley.

Boys State Champion

Pedro R. and Anthony C., Frontier STEM High School seniors attended the nationwide 79th Session of The American Legion Boys State of Missouri over the summer. Male students from across the state of Missouri attended the eight-day hands-on experience on the operation and fundamentals of government held at the University of Central Missouri (UCM). Students who attended learned to construct their own state by utilizing the core values, the need for competition, the value of public service, and the strength of the individual voice and vote. Those who attended The American Legion Boys State of Missouri were eligible to receive college credit and scholarships.

Here are a few takeaways from their experience:

"One of things I really enjoyed about this program is that at the beginning we started off as strangers but we left as brothers - we established a common ground and gained more independence," Pedro R.

"I learned not to be afraid to stand up for what you believe in - this experience helped me gain a new perspective on the word and see people for who they really are," Anthony C.

Playground Party at FSI Elementary

FSI Elementary hosted a playground party for all students who received Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) points! Students enjoyed a refreshing Fla-Vor-Ice while enjoying their time together on the playground!

FSHS Pep Assembly

The first pep assembly of year was held on Friday, September 21st! Students wore their class colors to demonstrate their school pride!

  • 9th grade - Red
  • 10th grade - Yellow
  • 11th grade - Orange
  • 12th grade - Blue

The school celebrated and showed their support for the Cheerleaders, Girls' Volleyball team and Boys Soccer team! The assembly ended with a friendly game of co-ed volleyball with teachers joining in on the camaraderie!

Home Visits

Home visits are off to a great start for the 2018-19 school year at Frontier Schools.

With our diverse student body, home visits are paramount in bridging cultural gaps that might exist. These visits also provide opportunities for staff to understand their students better by visiting them in their home environments. The goal is to foster a true partnership – with both students and their families.

Truman State Visits FSE

On September 11th, Nathan Elder, Admissions Counselor from Truman State University visited FSE students to share information about college life and what it means to be a Truman State Bulldog. Students learned about their academic programs, athletic opportunities and how to get involved on campus. This was an educational and useful presentation to get students ready for life after high school.

Seniors Visit the University of Missouri-Kansas City

Frontier STEM High School seniors visited the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) on September 12th. Students received a campus tour and had the opportunity to ask questions about their college admissions process. Students left feeling ready and confident to begin the next chapter of their academic future.

Missouri Western State University Visits With Seniors

Roberta Foster, Admissions Representative from Missouri Western State University (MWSU) visited with FSHS seniors on September 20th. Seniors received in-depth information about the admissions process, financial aid and available scholarships. This was an eye opening and effective way for seniors to better understand and prepare for their college applications.

University of Central Missouri Visited Seniors

On September 25th, Jennifer Hermanson, Admissions Representative, visited seniors at Frontier STEM High School to share information about University of Central Missouri (UCM). Seniors received educational materials about college life at UCM and how to start the application process. This was an efficient and useful way for students to have their questions answered regarding academic majors, college activities and much more.
