1st Annual Parent Academy
The Parent Academy is a FREE, district-wide initiative that strives to directly engage parents in their children’s education by providing the support needed to help their students be successful.
The Parent Academy consisted of a series of educational and inspirational sessions covering a wide variety of topics; including: How to Help Your Child With Math Homework, Conscious Discipline at Home, Helping Your Child Make Healthy Relationship Choices, How to Stay Involved at the Secondary Level, Healthy Eating Habits, Mentoring, College Prep and Financial Aid, STEM High School Activities, and NWEA.
Those who attended received a complimentary breakfast, a Parent Academy t-shirt, a certificate of completion, and a chance to win tickets to the Dinosaur Exhibit at Union Station!
Here's what we heard from those who attended:
“I felt empowered! I learned a lot of great information and I really look forward to the next
one.” - Laura R., FSI Middle
“I enjoyed all three presentations. You didn’t have to give us food or prizes – the information
alone was well worth it!” – M. Deavila, FSI Middle
Parent Champions were also recognized at the beginning of the event for their contribution to the benefit of students, teachers and the school during the 2017-18 school year.
Thank you to everyone to helped make this event possible and thank you to everyone that attended!

A Top Contender for KC Regional Teacher of the Year
Mrs. Pughsley was also recently named District Teacher of the Year by Frontier Schools for the 2017-18 school year. With this recognition, Mrs. Pughsley said she feels a tremendous amount of support and honor from fellow teachers and administrative staff. She is currently working to bring new programs into the school, such as a Junior Honor Society – all while creating more opportunities for student recognition and college preparation and readiness.
"This recognition has given me the inspiration to continue to develop professionally as a teacher and a leader. I want to create stronger partnerships between home and school with families, and I hope to encourage my peers to be ambassadors for Frontier Schools and to take more interest in educational issues," expressed Amirah Pughsley.
Congratulations, Mrs. Amirah Pughsley!
Boys State Champion
Here are a few takeaways from their experience:
"One of things I really enjoyed about this program is that at the beginning we started off as strangers but we left as brothers - we established a common ground and gained more independence," Pedro R.
"I learned not to be afraid to stand up for what you believe in - this experience helped me gain a new perspective on the word and see people for who they really are," Anthony C.

Home Visits
With our diverse student body, home visits are paramount in bridging cultural gaps that might exist. These visits also provide opportunities for staff to understand their students better by visiting them in their home environments. The goal is to foster a true partnership – with both students and their families.
