What's happening in Room 6?

Math

This week, we will be learning about greater than, less than and equal to. We will sing a song to learn that the "gator eats the greater" number. The song has hand motions that help make the activity hands-on. (Just in case you see your child doing these during homework time.) Once we learn the motions and the song, we will transfer our understanding of the symbols to compare not only numbers, but place value blocks, animal weights, domino facts, etc.

Reading

This week, we are starting fresh! Our story this week is called Ruby in Her Own Time. It's a story about a duck that takes her time to reach milestones. The moral of the story relates to our monthly theme - perseverance.


Our phonics pattern for this week is the ending consonant blends - ng and nk. We will spend lots of time building words, creating rhyming words, and sorting words to practice the blends ng and nk. Our spelling test will be next week.


Our comprehension strategy that we will focus on this week is comparing and contrasting. We will do various activities to compare and contrast characters, settings, and stories. Some of the stories will be read whole group, some will be read independently, and one will be our listening story during center time.

Writing

As writers we are finishing up our expository paragraphs about Honey Bees. It has taken some time to get to our publishing stage, but it has been worth it. Our expository paragraph has a topic sentence and supporting details all about honey bees. Our paragraphs showcase all of the information we learned about honey bees.

President Share

Thank you for helping your child prepare for our president share. The posters look fantastic! So far, we have learned about Barack Obama, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, Franklin Roosevelt, and Ulysses S. Grant. I can't wait to see this week's presentations!
