Lucille M. Nixon School

from the principal

May 10, 2021

Superintendent Austin included the important news in his Friday update that Ms. Amy Sheward will be the new principal of Lucille Nixon Elementary effective July 1, 2021, pending approval of the PAUSD Board at Tuesday’s Board Meeting. I know you have been waiting to hear this good news!

Ms. Sheward has been in the Palo Alto Unified School District for twelve years, and in the education field for 28 years. Over the years she has worked as a Kindergarten teacher, Special Education Teacher, Reading Teacher, Resource Specialist, Teacher on Special Assignment, Special Education Coordinator, and Assistant Principal.

She is currently the Assistant Principal at JLS Middle School. Prior to that position, she was a Coordinator of Special Education and Education Specialist at Palo Verde Elementary School. She holds two Master’s Degrees in Education from Harvard Graduate School of Education and Salem State College and a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from Lesley University. She has a multiple subject teaching credential, reading certificate, and a Specialist Instruction Credential.

Ms. Sheward has stated, “I am incredibly honored to be joining the Nixon team as principal for 2021-22. I am so happy to join your community, meet you and work alongside you! I can’t wait to partner with you to support all students, families and staff. Soon, I will begin transitioning with Mary Pat O’Connell, and I sincerely welcome your input as we start our new partnership for the upcoming year. Please reach out to me any time with any questions or ideas you have. I look forward to meeting all of you and having conversations with you soon!”

Our special education team and I got to know Ms. Sheward during the couple years that she was a Special Education Coordinator in the district and worked with us at Nixon. I am delighted that she will be taking over the role of principal. I know she will soon discover what a strong staff and supportive community she has joined!

Feeling Much Appreciated!

Last week, the lovely flowers, yummy treats, sweet cards, delightful lunches, and the special drink thermos made us all feel very, very much appreciated! Thank you so much to all of our students, their families and our Nixon PTA! It was very kind of you because we know that, like all of us, you are feeling a little tired right now. Your thoughtfulness means so much!
