A Message from Ms. Lilly
RNE Newsletter January 26th, 2017
The Principal's Office
This has been a great week of classroom visits. As I traveled throughout the building, it is so exciting to see our students engaged in learning! I had several kindergarten students share their "how to" writing and I must say I am impressed with their work.
While students are off for our second release day tomorrow, our teachers will spend a full day working with our literacy and math consultants. Teachers walk away from this learning with new ideas to foster student growth. We will have our final release day on Friday, March 30, 2017.
Thank you so much to the families that joined us Tuesday for Science Night! Our teachers planned wonderful activities and fun was had by all!
Next week, our fifth graders will travel to Tybee Island. This will be a wonderful hands on learning experience for them.
The Georgia Department of Education (GDOE) released its annual School Climate Star and Financial Efficiency Star ratings for all schools in Georgia. Our 2016 score is 4 stars, which is an increase from last year.
School climate refers to the quality and character of school life – the “culture” of a school. School climate ratings are based on survey results and data from the 2015-2016 school year, and each school is rated on a 1-5 scale, with five stars representing an excellent school climate, and one star representing a school climate in need of improvement.
We believe our school has an exceptional climate, and that’s greatly due to your support as a parent or guardian. We are also proud of our teachers who work with our Positive Behavior Intervention Team to develop and implement our school wide expectations. These all affect the positive climate of our school.
As the principal of a wonderful school, I am committed to our students and how we promote a safe and nurturing learning environment. I appreciate your support as we continue to make our school the best it can be.
Enjoy the weekend!
Best,
Maureen

Poetry Alive
Thanks to the generous support of literacy from our PTA we were able to host Poetry Alive from Asheville, NC for all students in grades K - 4 this past week. Their performances were interactive, entertaining and included dozens of memorized poems. This is no dry poetry lesson! Our performers are accomplished actors and educators who have a passion for literature, theatre and education. How could we ask for more?
Many thanks - based on our feedback and the student laughter I am sure we will invite them again!
RedBird Math at Home
Working from Home with Redbird Mathematics
We are excited to inform you that your child currently has a student account with Redbird Mathematics (RBM). This account was obtained through Fulton County. RBM is a GK-7 web-based mathematics curricula developed at Stanford University. Students may interact with this program anywhere they have an internet connection and access device, which means they can log in at school and at home. We hope your child enjoys using Redbird Mathematics!
Please contact your child's homeroom teacher for login information.

SAFE AND DRUG-FREE SCHOOLS and COMMUNITIES SURVEY (Grades 3-5)
The Georgia Student Health Survey II (GSHS II) is an anonymous, statewide survey instrument that identifies school climate issues that impact student achievement. The survey for elementary schools includes 11 questions and should take no more than 10 minutes for students to complete.
The data collected from the survey will be used to identify critical areas of need for our Safe and Drug-Free Schools efforts. Survey analysis of the data provides information/data that:
Meets the No Child Left Behind Title IV mandated data collection requirements;
Promotes a classroom atmosphere that allows teachers to teach and students to learn; and
Develops and offers experiences that involve students in applying the concepts of making healthy decisions, accepting responsibility for behaviors, and understanding consequences.
Our desire is to involve parents in the education of their children. If you do not wish for your child to participate in this important activity, please contact their homeroom teacher by February 1. We will begin surveys on February 3rd.

School Governance Council
Roswell North Elementary will be electing new representatives to serve on the School Governance Council. This year we have two parent/guardian positions and one teacher position open for election this March. Our School Governance Council has a leadership role in the governance of the school. The Council works with the principal on the long-term vision and strategy for the school. They are responsible for approving the school’s strategic plan and budget recommendations, as well as design innovative solutions to increase academic achievement and meet the unique needs of our school community. This year, our Council worked diligently with our principal and leadership to write and unveil a new strategic plan that supports academic growth so all students achieve or exceed grade level mastery.
Elections for the parent/guardian and teacher positions on the School Governance Council will be held March 22nd – March 28th. Candidates interested in running for an elected position on the Council must complete a candidate declaration form and submit to the district office by February 17th.

Nominating Committee - Our PTA needs your help!
The PTA is looking for individuals to nominate eligible persons to serve in the vacant officer roles for the 2017-2018 school year. We need 3 individuals along with 2 alternates from our PTA membership to serve on this committee. This is an exciting opportunity and important task to help propose the next representatives to sit on the executive committee. If you are interested in serving on this nominating committee, please email your name and contact information to me at rnespresident@gmail.com

Transportation Changes
Changes to student transportation must be made in writing with your signature. When making a transportation change (after school activity, daycare instead of car rider), please make sure to include the following information:
1. Student’s first and last name
2. Teacher’s Name
3. Normal way home
4. Transportation change
5. Dates for change
6. Parent or guardian signature
Our bus drivers work very hard to make sure students have great experiences while in their care. Our transportation department ensures that bus drivers have student contact information for all students assigned to their bus. This allows them to contact parents in the event of an emergency. For student safety, our board policy states-
“Pupils will ride on assigned buses, board, and debark at their designated stop. Parents may request in writing any exceptions to this rule. Requests must be made to the Transportation Department. In case of emergency, the principal may authorize a student to ride a different bus or change bus stops:
a) No requests shall be approved for social activities or projects.
b) Requests involving childcare shall be given consideration only if there is room on the bus.”
Many of our buses are quite full so adding additional students is difficult.
I appreciate your support as we return students safely to you each day!
Each year, parents are able to provide feedback about their child's school by completing the Georgia Parent Survey. This anonymous survey is conducted by the Georgia Department of Education and the participation results directly contribute to our CCRPI School Climate Rating. We would love to have 100% participation! Please take a moment to complete this short survey by answering a few questions about our school. You can access the survey by clicking on the following link:
