Weekly Coaching Communication
Make it a great day -- every day!
12 - 16 March 2018
Hats off to you!
Here's this past week's amazement:
- Teachers -- Excellent work with submitting Module #2 for the Rigorous Reading assignment. A common theme from your reflections is the depth of learning that happened with a scaffolded or close reading of the material in your class. Keep it up - module #3 is on Monday, March 26.
- Thank you, Mr. Halac for giving up some major physical activity so your PE students could read for Dr. Seuss Week at the primary. Mrs. Cook and the other Kindergarten teachers appreciate your students and you!
- Monday's and Tuesday's weather last week was less than ideal -- thank you teachers for being flexible in allowing students to arrive late but safe. Special Shout Outs to those, like Mr. Havener, who were first to respond to our students in need.
- Staff Pointer nominations of the week -- several times the reason for nominating a staff member is out of gratefulness for covering or lending a helping hand. The fact that teachers do this for each other is a strong testament to the family we know that is so important to continue to make this school great. Thank you for supporting each other.

Jim Knight -- Using Video for High Impact Instruction
Barbara Leete, the instructional coach from the primary building, offers these ideas and prompts if you want to just watch the video tape yourself:
Using Video for High-Impact Instruction If you don’t want others to see your video, then consider watching yourself. Here are some Look Fors when watching yourself: Rate of Interaction - How often do you recognize students for appropriate behavior? Possible Goal: 5 positives for every correction Fixed Versus Growth Mindset - Do you praise smartness or effort? Possible Goal: Positive statements are 90% growth statements. Consistent Corrections - Are behaviors to be corrected identified and clarified? Possible Goal: 90% correction of identified behaviors Opportunities to Respond - During intensive-explicit instruction do you engage and confirm learning by prompting students to respond in some way at least 4 times per minute? Possible Goal: Average of 4 opportunities to respond every 1 minute Type, Kind and Level of Questions - It is important to select the right questions for the kind of learning teachers wish to foster in the classroom. Tally the categories as you teach: Type - Close ended, Open ended Kind - Right/Wrong or Opinion Level - Knowledge, skill or big idea Possible Goal: During constructivist/exploration learning shoot for 90% open or opinion questions Instructional Time Versus Non-Instructional Time - Use a stopwatch to see how much time is spent on settling in, getting materials, taking roll, taking lunch count, transitions, etc. Possible Goal: Non-instructional time is less than 5% Teacher Talk Versus Student Talk - This can depend on the type of instruction at the time or what the lesson script calls for to deliver the teaching. Possible Goal: 50% student talk
