Shout Outs
- I would like to give a shout out to Catina Wilchenski for promoting our Essential Eight theme in her classroom. She has posted a relevant quote outside her classroom door and searched for materials to use in morning meetings with her students. Her students were able to explain what is meant by the term "growth mindset" in their own words. This theme was the topic of a writing activity she did with her class this past week, and she is planning to use the student responses in future activities. - S. Beckman
- Dr. Lenny Sanchez shared the follow feedback from pre-service teachers after their first day at DFES - Commented they never learned about their school's history as students and how important this is for building community and honoring the school's past. Appreciated the value of not hiding the past (in spite of difficult struggles) and deciding to move forward -to grow and be something different from the past.
- - Several students expressed DFES as the most diverse school they've ever been in regarding student AND teacher population. Really glad to have an opportunity to be in a school that encompasses such diversity.
- - Loved learning about the school's history and understand who came before them at the school.
- - In their USC classes, they explained how they've talked a lot about diversity and the importance of embracing values of diversity in school. They shared, though, how incredible it was to see what it can look like in a personal and day-to-day way within a school such as studying the school's history and engaging in the various projects they saw evidence of on the walls.
- - They cited examples such as the Shoebox collection, recycling, etc. as ways that teach children in school how to care for their school community and the "outside" community.
- - One student praised the SRO for working in the school and loved how the school has her involved with students' work. This student's father is a Deputy Sheriff and is well aware of the negative stereotypes of police. When our class saw the SRO working with students on their science projects in the library, this student in particular teared up about this -- appreciating how it changes the narrative for what police do.
- - Other students commented on how so much of what they saw made it clear everyone is PROUD of what they do - proud of everything in the school. And, that being proud is a fundamental value in the school.
