Decades of research inform us of the power social emotional learning has positive student outcomes in academics, emotional intelligence, and long-term life achievements. This unprecedented shift to a new type of learning experience may have a lasting and profound impact on young people's academic, social, emotional, and life outcomes, (CASEL 2020). Together at this half day session, we will provide guidance on leading critical conversation necessary for staff and students upon re-entry and explore actionable recommendations from CASEL to support your reentry plan.

What will we say the first days back?

Tuesday, Aug. 25th, 9:30am

This is an online event.

Re-entry conversations have been at the top of everyone's mind since we initially went home. Conversations with students about what they experienced, how they are coping, and what we all can do to build our emotional resilience will be a crucial first step for anyone in education. Together, we will draw connection from our emotional resilience to what gaps students will have in developing coping, advocating, and essentially, resilience skills of their own. We will explore strategies and resources related to their experiences from the pandemic to the racial justice protests to foster a culturally responsive environment.

Book Study: Relationship, Responsibility, and Regulation: Trauma-Invested Practices for Fostering Resilient Learners

Thursday, Sep. 17th, 2:30-3:30pm

This is an online event.

Educators have a unique opportunity to influence students' learning, attitudes, and futures. This book will invigorate your practice and equip you to empower all students no matter their histories. In the much anticipated sequel to Fostering Resilient Learners, Souers provides a resource filled with specific examples, language, and interventions to be a trauma-invested entity. Over the course of 4 sessions we will read, process, and set intentions based on our learning. Together let's explore what this resource has to offer:

  • Explain how to create a culture of safety in which everyone feels valued, important, and capable of learning.
  • Describe the four areas of need-emotional, relational, physical, and control-that drive student behaviors and show how to meet these needs with interventions framed around the new three Rs.
  • Illustrate trauma-invested practices in action through real scenarios that identify students' unmet needs, examine the situation from five stakeholder perspectives, and suggest interventions to support students and their families.
  • Offer opportunities to challenge your beliefs and develop deeper and different ways of thinking about your role in your students' lives.
