Holiday Shop Dec. 18-21
Pomerado's annual holiday shop will be happening in the MPR this week from Monday, December 18th- Thursday, December 21st. Gifts are priced from approximately $0.25 to $12.00 with most items between $3.00-$7.00. You should have received a shopping pamphlet that came home with your child. You can make a list and set price points for their shopping and include money or a prepaid gift certificate in their envelope to bring on their class shopping day. If you would like to be part of the fun, you can volunteer during your child's classroom shopping time or during another time that works for you. Poway Unified Strategic Arts Committee🎨🎭🖌️
We are excited to share an opportunity for you to get involved in shaping the future of visual and performing arts education in our community. Poway Unified will form a Strategic Committee to review and improve the current strategic arts plan.
The committee is seeking participation from teachers (of all grade levels and subjects), administrators, district office staff, parents, guardians, and students to be a part of the committee. As a member, you'll examine the progress of our existing plan, analyze arts education data, and create recommendations for visual and performing arts initiatives. Committee members will represent a diverse and inclusive range of representatives across Poway Unified.
Please view this flier to learn more about the committee, including meeting dates and how to apply. The deadline to apply is December 22, 2023.
If you have any questions, we are happy to help. Just reach out to Kayla Warren at kwarren@powayusd.com anytime. Forward this invitation to other members of our community that may be interested.
REMINDERS
Flu Season Information 🤒
The cold and flu season is especially difficult for families now with the triple threat of the influenza virus or flu, respiratory syncytial virus (better known as RSV), and COVID-19.
As a reminder, please do not send your child to school if they are feeling sick or experiencing symptoms of a virus. Keeping your sick child home will be a great benefit for the health and wellness of our students and staff. Also, reach out to your child’s medical provider to ensure your student is up-to-date on vaccinations.
What Symptoms to Look For
The flu and COVID-19 are both spread from person-to-person, especially indoors and in crowded places. Symptoms for both viruses include fever, headache, and muscle and joint pain, as well as a sore throat and coughing.
RSV is a respiratory virus that has been detected in previous cold and flu seasons. Symptoms of RSV include cough, runny nose, and fever. Treatment consists of managing symptoms and, in severe cases, hospitalization.
Tips to Avoid Getting Sick
San Diego County health officials offer these tips to prevent getting sick:
• Consider wearing a well-fitting, good-quality mask, especially indoors or in crowded spaces
• Wash hands thoroughly and often
• Use hand sanitizers, if unable to wash hands
• Stay away from sick people
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
• Clean commonly touched surfaces
The influenza vaccine is available at doctors’ offices and retail pharmacies and is covered by medical insurance. People with no health care coverage can get vaccinated at one of the County’s six public health centers or a local community clinic. To find the nearest location, visit the nearest San Diego County Flu Vaccine Location or call 2-1-1 San Diego. The CDC recommends that everyone 6 months and older get vaccinated every year.
Poway Unified School District will continue to work with local health officials to share helpful information. Thank you for your partnership in helping us keep our students and staff healthy. We thank you for your cooperation and support.
Importance of School Attendance🏫🕰️
Being in school everyday means your child won't miss out on valuable learning and social experiences. When possible, please try to schedule appointments and family trips outside of school hours.
Did you know?
Research around attendance in elementary school suggests:
• Starting in preschool and kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
• Missing 10%, or about 2 days each month over the course of a school year, can make it harder to learn to read.
• Students can still fall behind if they miss just one or two days every few weeks.
• Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school—and themselves. Start building this habit in preschool so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Eventually good attendance will be a skill that will help them succeed in high school and college.
What can you do?
• Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
• Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
• Keep your child healthy and make sure your child has the required shots.
• Introduce your children to their teachers and classmates before school starts.
• Develop backup plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor or another parent.
• Try to schedule non-urgent related medical appointments and extended trips when school isn’t in session.
• If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors and other parents for advice on how to make your child feel comfortable and excited about learning.
We want to help remove any barriers to school attendance. Please reach out if we can help connect your family with needed resources or services.
