The Raptor Review
Volume 1, Issue 7- Life at RFD - March 2023
Message from the Principal
Hello Raptor Families!
March appears to have come in like a lamb, so here is hoping that it does not go out like a lion, or so the saying goes! Report cards have gone home and we encourage you to reach out to your child's homeroom teacher if you have any concerns. As we move into Term 2, supporting our students to become avid readers is our main priority! If you would like resources to support this development at home, our teachers are happy to point you in the right direction. We are learning more about the science of reading as a school, and we have some great interactive activities that you could try at home.
As we continue our goal to "Reignite the Raptors", we continue to have many activities planned to connect our school to our families, community, and each other. We recently had The Council for Persons with Disabilities visit the school to share their "Time in My Shoes" program where students in grades 4-8 were given the opportunity to experience what it is like to navigate school with a disability such as hearing or vision loss, or being confined to a wheelchair. They were very responsive to this opportunity and asked many insightful questions. Following March Break we will be hosting "Rocks and Rings" to promote the curling experience. All grades, K-6 will participate. Floor hockey is also running in the junior grades and we are hoping to begin bench-ball soccer with the primary grades following the break.
Our February Caring BINGO winners were: Rooms 203, 205, 102, 109 and 401. Congratulations!
We continue to participate in our "Walk Across Canada". So far we have made it across each of the Atlantic provinces, as well as Quebec, Ontario and Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta! We hope to finish crossing British Columbia by the time we begin March Break! Our leading walkers thus far continue to be our two kindergarten classes! Our school has walked well over to 7000 km so far.
The school year can certainly fly by after March Break, but we still have important learning to do! Term two aims to be full of learning opportunities and we need our students to be on time and present each day. We thank you for the attendance efforts that many of you are committed to. Research tells us that attendance matters!
We are looking forward to Spring arriving and the beauty of nature's renewal. Let's keep working together to help our students be the best that they can be!
Regards,
Barb Bloom, Principal
School Council Update
Our Council Chair continues to be Kelly Grant and we thank her for her support along with each of our Council members! It takes a team to keep RFD full of fun, activity and meaningful learning.
Thank you to our Council!
From the Ontario Chief Medical Officer of Health
Illness and Masking
Due to an increase of respiratory illnesses, Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health is strongly recommending masks for all indoor public settings, including schools and childcares. KPR schools are mask-friendly places. Along with our local public health unit partners, we strongly encourage masking, while also respecting individual choice about wearing masks. Schools continue to have 3-ply masks available for student and staff use. Please remember to screen daily, stay home when you are sick and clean your hands often to help keep everyone healthy.

Bell Schedules
We continue to follow the same bell schedule at RFD. Please do NOT send your child/ren to school prior to 9:00 unless they are in Compass Care.
We continue to ask that families remain outside of the school yard both before school and after school. We invite you to say farewell and hello to your students at the gate or the curb. This helps us to keep track of who belongs on our yard and who doesn't.
Our bell schedule is as follows:
9:00-9:15 Supervised yard time
9:15 Entry Bell
9:20 Announcements
10:55 Recess
11:15 Snack
11:35 Middle Block of Learning
1:15 Recess

1:55 Final Block of Learning
