Mrs. Pressnell's Reading and Science News
We are about to start non-fiction information text in Reading. This will be reading information that informs them about a topic. We will be discussing the parts of informational text.
Scholastic Reading orders will be coming home this next Thursday, I did not get them put together soon enough. When you order from Scholastic, it means more books for your student and more books for our classroom, because they give me free books when you guys order!
SCIENCE
We are finishing up our mixtures and solutions unit. The students had a good time tasting a solution they created of salt water. They also enjoyed separating the ocean they created, or at least trying to. Our next unit we will be studying are types of energy and insulators and conductors!
Mrs. Allen's Math News
We are estimating the sums and differences of fractions. When you take your child to the grocery store, point out places where this might come in handy. (Using the scale to measure fruit: Ask ABOUT how much does this weigh? We are estimating to the nearest 1/4.) Point out fractions in recipes and serving sizes. Let them help you estimate how much of each ingredient is needed. Talk about upcoming events, and encourage them estimate how long it will take to get ready, travel, and attend to the nearest half hour.
Students who clip out part of an ad, recipe, or ingredient list and explain to me how they used it estimate fractions will get Eagle Bucks!
Students will be tested over this material on Friday.
