Important—Lunch Expectations:
Today, we had to restart lunchroom expectations. As the year comes to a close, we want to ensure clear communication and expectations for entering, being in, and exiting the lunchroom. Teachers will be escorting their students into the lunchroom, and I will be on the stage on the microphone reviewing lunchroom expectations daily. Prior to students going out for recess, I will be reviewing expectations for their recess time. This is an earned time, so if students are unable to stay seated, clean up after themselves, and demonstrate safe behavior, they will not earn this outside free time. If your student doesn’t comply with these expeditions, I will be reaching out via phone to partner and ensure your student is successful.
Evergreen PBIS Lessons in Advisory
Safe, Kind & Responsible is our school-wide PBIS expectations specific to Evergreen Middle School. Below is the communication that is posted throughout school which was co-constructed with scholars and staff.
Please ask your scholar about this and encourage these behaviors at home as well.
Safe, Kind & Responsible
Safe, Kind & Responsible will have a two part focus that is taught by staff to students in Advisory, and reinforced by staff.
• Focus 1: Use of Positive Talk –Positively Supporting Others
• Focus 2: Create a Safe Space –Positively Resolving Conflict
Staff and students will have the opportunity to reflect on their work.
This is all linked to our school goal to have a safety and security plan that includes Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)
Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying (HIB)
• We proactively address and teach scholars about HIB
• We have a district and school policy that responds to all reports of HIB
- Anyone can file a HIB complaint form 3207
- Formal investigation
- If founded, consequences
• Paired with positive reinforcement and re-teaching
• Support plans are always provided for safety of scholars: written and specific
Social Media
Evergreen Middle School and Federal Way Public schools is committed to ensuring a safe learning environment for all scholars and staff. We are asking for your partnership in ensuring scholars are not engaging in harmful and distracting ways on social media. Any actions related to social media that result in vandalism or harm to others will result in swift action and consequences in alignment with our Rights and Responsibilities. If inappropriate matters happen after school; however, have connection to students on campus in harmful ways, this can also result in disciplinary measures.
Please talk to your scholar about the inappropriateness of social media and avoiding posting on Snapchat, Discord, and other sites that have an impact on student well-being and safety. As a school community, we will continue to have lessons on responsible use of social media.
- Scholars have noted social media has created a distraction and can contribute to cases of HIB
- Postings on TikTok, Snapchat, Discord, and other sites are having an impact on student well-being and safety
- Includes re-posting and sharing posts
- Students are disciplined to full extent when it impacts students on campus (called Nexus)
- Appropriate use of social media is taught in school through advisory and other lessons
Evergreen is an IB World School
This week I had the chance to visit the beautiful campus of Thomas Jefferson high school for the first time. Thomas Jefferson, or “TJ” as it is affectionately called, is where many Evergreen Grizzlies go after they graduate 8th grade. Perhaps TJ’s most famous feature is that it is an IB World School. Did you know that Evergreen is also an IB World School?
As IB World Schools, we challenge students to think deeply about material and to build key habits and attitudes that are necessary for college and career success. While TJ has the “end” part of the IB program, we have the “middle” part, which is why you’ll often hear the acronym “MYP”. MYP stands for Middle Years Program. When I visited TJ, I observed students applying their learning in a variety of ways, such as through presentations, projects, and class discussions. It was wonderful to hear from TJ teachers that many of their most successful students went to Totem/Evergreen in middle school.
As an Evergreen parent or guardian, you’ll be happy to know that universities highly value an IB education. Students who have attended an IB World School increase their chances of getting into their preferred college, and students who are awarded the prestigious IB Diploma are eligible for college credits. I personally saved a lot of money at the University of Washington thanks to the college credits I earned as an IB student. Want to know more about the IB program? Feel free to email me. I’d love to start a conversation.
