RILINK Advisory Board

RILINK adopted a five year Strategic Plan in 2020. One of the goals is to strengthen RILINK's Organizational Structure and Community Outreach. An objective under this goal is to develop an ongoing Advisory Board in order to utilize the professional expertise of RILINK’s members and other interested parties to help guide RILINK’s evolution and future expansion.

Will we see you at Zoomulia?

Many questions and discussion points have come up because of the transitions to Follett hosted and OverDrive as well as other issues of interest to RILINK member librarians and staff. To address these questions RILINK is scheduling a number of Zoom sessions for the upcoming months, which we are calling “Zoomulias.” These are our online version of the traditional Spanish/Portuguese tertulias, which are regularly-scheduled events, usually held in a public place where food and drink can be added to an ongoing discussion with a common theme.


In most cases, except where noted on the schedule as it develops, these Zoomulias will not take the place of RILINK’s Professional Learning offerings and will not provide certificates for attendance. Some of the hour-long Zoomulias will be themed, but there will be ample opportunity to ask and answer questions as well to bring up other topics of interest. All sessions will held on alternating Thursdays at 3:30 pm starting April 15. Here are the topics for the April and May sessions:


April 15 - AASL New Release on Labeling Practices

Do you use genre labels in your library? Do you want to genrefy your library collection or have you already done so? Do you organize books by reading level or use labels to identify reading levels? The new American Association of School Libraries has released a new statement on labeling practices along with he AASL Position Statement on Labeling Practices that qualifies their previous direction in shelving practices in school libraries and has made some members rethink the way they are organizing books in their libraries for the ease of their students. If you have an opinion on this or have questions about it, join the RILINK Zoomulia on Thursday, April 15th at 3:30pm for a discussion. The session facilitator is Marianne Mirando.

April 29 - Capstone, enhancements to PebbleGo and PebbleGo Next, plus their new subscription, Capstone Connect.

Please invite your district curriculum people to see Capstone Connect, which is an intuitive, easy-to-use standards alignment search tool that helps teachers find the exact content they need from a comprehensive collection of PebbleGo modules, thematic eBook bundles, and compilations of instructional materials providing thousands of resources, all aligned to state and national standards. With a few simple clicks, educators can connect their students with the content they need for academic success.

  • Check out our new RISOCKS/OverDrive guide at https://guides.rilink.org/risocks.
  • Both RISOCKS logo options are now available for use to promote Rhode Island Shared OverDrive Collection for Kids and Schools ( aren't you glad we nicknamed it RISOCKS?). RILINK Schools LibGuides users will find the files in Image Manager in the Shared Library folder named RISOCKS logos.The logos are also available on RILINK Help Google Drive.
  • Looking for additional online resources for yourself, students, teachers, administrators and parents? Visit Dr. Joyce Valenza's website at https://schoollibrarynj.libguides.com/home/. Permission to copy the LibGuides has been given and are already available in RILINK
  • The titles for the RICBA and RITBA nominees for 2022 have been added to a guide for reuse. The title of the guide is Rhode Island Book Awards Nominees for 2022 for Reuse. Remember to Copy whatever you want to reuse. The RIMSBA titles will be made available as soon as the list is made public.
  • Need a new LibGuide on a particular topic? You can do a Google search to see what's out there by adding "libguide" to your search. Remember to ask the guide owner's permission if you want to use all or part of their guide. Try a Google search for "rhode island history primary sources libguide" or "teaching fractions libguide."
  • Vendor subscription forms and pricing on our web site have been updated for the upcoming year. Thank you to our vendors, as there are NO increases in pricing, even for renewals !
  • Watch for the following events:
    • Zoomulia session for a new subscription called Capstone Connect, details in this newsletter, also sent as an email to the RILINK list.
    • Upcoming Gale trial starting April 26th. Login information will be sent to the RILINK list.
  • Create QR codes for website URLs easily in Google Chrome

    1. Click in the address bar.
    2. Locate the QR code icon in the far right corner of the bar.
    3. Click on it.
    4. Download the QR code created.

May 17 Professional Learning Sessions

RILINK is moving from BookLynx to OverDrive beginning in the 2021-22 school year. Learn more about RISOCKS, Rhode Island Shared OverDrive Collection for Kids and Schools, and SORA, the OverDrive app for K12 students at this session.

More funding available for Rhode Island schools

The new stimulus package passed by Congress just released $168 billion to schools with approximately $2 billion dollars being used for summer resources/reading, and $2 billion for after-school enrichment with another $10 billion marked for closing COVID learning losses. Under the American Rescue Plan (ARP) Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER), the minimum distribution to LEAs is 90%. Here are the amounts allocated to Rhode Island:

  • Total: $415,015,610
  • Minimum LEA distribution: $373,514,049
  • Maximum SEA Reservation1: (10%) $41,501,561
  • Maximum For SEA Administration: (½ of 1%) $2,075,078

Within 30 days of receiving funding, school districts must publish a plan to reopen schools for in-person instruction. In addition, at least 20% of funds must be used to address learning loss through evidence-based interventions that respond to students’ academic, social, and emotional needs. The remaining funds can be used for any allowable use under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, Individuals with Disabilities Education Act; Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act; and Adult Education and Family Literacy Act. Funds can also be used for such purposes as (list is NOT inclusive)

  • conducting activities to address the needs of students from low-income families, children with disabilities, English learners, racial and ethnic minorities, students experiencing homelessness, and foster care youth
  • purchasing educational technology (including hardware, software, and connectivity as well as assistive technology or adaptive equipment)
