Summer Learning
We want our learners to enjoy the summer break, get outside, and have adventures with family and friends. This is an important part of being a kid!
We also believe that families should establish routines to maintain learning over the
summer. You can help your child with the dreaded “summer slide” AND savor the
summer months!
Here are some suggestions…
iReady Lessons: iReady will be available throughout the summer until mid-August. iReady lessons will help your child maintain learning over the summer. 15 minutes a day in reading and math is a great routine for the summer months. Please bookmark this link: https://login.i-ready.com/
Reading: All reading is good reading! Books, magazines, maps, signs, etc. Have your child read them to themselves or aloud to you and then ask them to tell you about what they read and what it means or what they think will happen next. Check out the Children's Choices Reading List. Also, check out the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge.
Writing: Have your child keep a journal or write letters to family members. Write stories together to share with a neighbor or family member. Write book reviews (or product reviews) on Amazon. Be sure that they know their writing is important and that their reader wants to be able to understand what they’ve written.
Math: Numbers are everywhere! Ask your child about the numbers you see. Skip count together by 2, 5, or 10. Split a pizza and have them tell you what fraction of the pizza they
get to have. The National Association of Elementary School Principal’s has some good suggestions to support these skills, too!
It is important for students to maintain their growth while enjoying summer and having
adventures with family and friends!
Medication at School
All medication must be picked-up before 6/14/22. An adult must pick-up medication (not students). Any medication that is not picked up will be safely discarded.
Summer Reading at Novi Public Library
Monday, June 6th kicks off this year's Summer Reading Program, Oceans of Possibilities, at the Novi Public Library. Readers of all ages are invited to participate. Guests are asked to read a certain amount of books by August 13th to be eligible for some awesome prizes!
Welcome, New Hawks! - REMINDER
Do you know of a family who will be joining our school community next year? Please
help us plan for the 2022-2023 school year!
We encourage all new families to enroll ASAP! Whether they are a new kindergarten family or a family that recently moved into our attendance area, new Hawks should visit www.wlcsd.org/enrollment to begin the enrollment process. Please also call our main office so we can add them to our email list.
This helps us plan for the correct number of sections per grade level and impacts class sizes. Please spread the word and encourage new HWE Hawk families to enroll ASAP!
Hawk Pick-Up - REMINDERS
- All drivers are expected to park ONLY in designated parking spots. Please DO NOT park anywhere that may block the path of another vehicle.
We have found that the parking lot is busiest from 3:35 - 3:55. If your schedule allows, you can plan to arrive at HWE at or after 3:55 and contend with much less traffic. Our staff is prepared to monitor our pick-up process through 4:05.
ALL drivers must use caution and drive slowly.
Avoid cell phone use in our parking lot.
Watch for pedestrians.
We all play an important role in making our arrival and dismissal routines efficient and safe.
To reduce congestion, please use bus transportation (if eligible and available).
Optional COVID testing now available at the ESC - REPEAT
The District is now offering optional COVID testing to our staff, students, and parents. Both Rapid and PCR tests are available. The testing will take place at the Educational Services Center (850 Ladd Road, Building D Walled Lake, MI 48390) on Tuesdays and Fridays from 2-7 p.m.
The COVID testing staff, provided by a third party, will be responsible for letting people in the side door on the south side of the building.
- If you have insurance, your insurance provider will be billed.
- If you do not have insurance, there is a cost of $110.00 for a PCR test and $50.00 for a rapid test - This comes as a result of the Federal Government no longer providing funding for testing.
There will be signage placed both inside and outside of the building. To set up an appointment for testing, please complete this requisition form.
