Spiritual Reflection
Miss Sheila O'Callaghan
February 21, is the memorial of Peter Damian. Peter’s parents died when he was very young, so he was raised by elder brothers. He went to live in a monastery. The Pope asked him to become a bishop. He was a very good bishop, but he missed the peace and quiet of his monastery. The Pope allowed him to return to the monastery.
February 22, is Ash Wednesday. It is a day of Fast and Abstinence for adults. Many Christians receive a cross of ashes on the forehead. This powerful sign has been used by God’s people for hundreds of years. This cross of ashes tells neighbors and friends that we will try to do better. Be a kinder, loving person and with the help of Jesus, we will become better people.
Even though we are in the Lenten Season, we cannot forget St. Polycarp, Bishop and Martyr, who is remembered on February 23. He was taught by the apostle, John. St. Polycarp was arrested and martyred for being a Christian. He was very sure in his faith and believed in the power of the Holy Spirit.
As we are about to begin the Lenten Season, it is a good time to make some Lenten Resolutions. Think of some good things you can do and try your best to show your love of God. When you show love of God, then you are sharing your love with others.
Please pray for the sick, especially Father Mink, Father Jasper’s mom, Patrick Flanagan, and all the sick of our parish. Our Armed Forces and First Responders need our prayers. Please pray for them.
