Visible Learning

The Why, The Research, The Instructional Strategies

What is "Visible Learning"?

Visible Learning is really "visible teaching and learning". This occurs when learning is the explicit and transparent goal, when learning is appropriately challenging, and and when the teacher and the student both (in their various ways) seek to ascertain whether and to what degree the challenging goal is attained. Visible teaching and learning occurs when there is deliberate practice aimed at attaining mastery of a goal, when there is feedback given and sought, and when there are active, passionate, and engaged people in the act of learning.

  • Teachers see through the eyes of students--they see the process of learning as it is happening and can identify where students are in terms of meeting learning goals.
  • Students see teaching as the key to their on-going learning. They develop regulatory attributes.

Visible Learning: The Why, The Research, The Strategies

This learning session is designed using a microlearning format. It's hybrid in nature and intended to provide interactive professional learning in a large chunk that is then supported through delivery of brief, instructional videos to sustain the learning. What is that going to look like? Well, in a face-to-face, full day session, participants will engage in learning about Visible Learning and why it's important to the growth of our students. This will include how Visible Learning ties into the three dimensions of student engagement and how teachers can actively see and understand the progress students are making toward intended learning goals. This session is for ANY TEACHER in ANY CONTENT AREA.

Then, after the session, participants will receive emails with TWO practical teaching strategies per week that foster Visible Learning in the classroom. This will continue for 8 weeks!

Finally, we can all meet via Zoom to share our experiences, thoughts, and new ideas for incorporating Visible Learning in the Classroom as a wrap-up to our learning experience.

What is Microlearning?

Microlearning is a holistic approach for skill based learning and education which deals with relatively small learning units. It involves short-term-focused strategies especially designed for skill based understanding/learning/education.

Microlearning is a way of teaching and training employees in ways that take little time but ultimately reach the intended goal.
