The Mayan Civilization
Where?
The Mayan civilization was located in southern Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize.
What type of religion did they have?
The Mayans were polytheistic. They believed in many gods such as Ixtab, Kinich Ahau, Yum Cicil, Chac, and Kakulcan.
What were their social classes like?
The Mayans depended on their social classes to keep them in order within their society. They had the pope/church first then came the monarch, then the nobles, after the nobles came the knights and vassals, then the merchants, farmers, and craftsmen, then last but not least the peasnts and serfs.
What kind of government did they have?
The Mayans developed a hierarchical government. A hierarchical government is similar to a monarchy, this means that they were ruled by the kings and priests.
What was the economy and trade like?
As the cities in the Mayan civilization grew their food production and food trade increased. Their most valuable trade items were cacao seeds, salt, obsidian, and gold.
What did their Art and Architecture look like?
The art of the Maya has been called the richest of the New World because of the great complexity of pattern and limestone structures, faced with lime stucco, were the hallmark of ancient Maya architecture.
What did their agriculture consist of?
Their agriculture was the foundation of the civilization. They were big on farming since they had plenty of land to farm on. Corn and maze were their most valuable things that they farmed.
What caused their decline?
This civilization declined because they abused the land that they had when they were trying to produce crops which led to the lack of resources. Which eventually led to their vulnerability.
