Keep Calm & Storm On!
Letter from the "Editor"... Mrs. Kowalinski
Dear Santan Parents & Students:
AzMERIT State testing begins March 28th. We continue to work really, really hard to insure the best education for your child. I simply cannot express the importance of your child being here everyday during the testing week! J Please schedule (or reschedule) any appointments that interrupt the learning environment especially during the weeks of testing. Please know, if your child is taken out during of a test that is started they will not be able to complete it. Our students are very excited about showing you all they have learned this year via the state tests. Thank you so much for all you do with this important school-home relationship.
TAX CREDIT - Santan Junior high received over $65,000 in tax credit donations this year. On behalf of the students, staff, and administration, thank you very, very much. Because of your generosity, students are afforded many wonderful opportunities to participate in clubs, sports, and extra-curricular activities. It is a wonderful way to support your school and get a great tax write off at the end of the year! For more information, visit our school web site and click onto “Tax Credit Form”.
SITE COUNCIL – please join me on May 3, in the Media Center at 4:30 to participate in our SJHS Site Council committee. Parents are welcome to come and help us plan and make decisions regarding the upcoming school year. All are welcome! We hope to see you there.
BOOSTERS – our wonderful Boosters welcome new parents to join us the 2nd Tuesday of each month to help us plan our student events, fund raisers, and teacher support programs. Please join us on April 12th and May 10th in the Media Center at 4:30 PM. This is a great way to show your support to our teachers, students and school!
We have so much to look forward to during 4th quarter! Look for dates coming home for our National Junior Honor Society induction ceremony, Student Council elections, 8th grade semi-formal dance, 4th quarter sports, and much, much more! Check out our website for the posting of dates and other important information.

AZMerit Testing
Please mark your calendars for AZMerit testing days. Please DO NOT schedule any personal days, appointments, etc. on these days as it is extremely important we have all certified staff here. Of course, life gets in the way, so if you know of something that will prevent you from being here, please let us know so we can plan for your absence. In addition, no field trips should be planned during these days. The testing dates are as follows:
- Wednesday, March 29th
- Thursday, March 30th
- Friday, March 31st
Did you know that Santan is an AVID school?
AVID is a fourth- through twelfth-grade system to prepare students for four-year college eligibility. It has a proven track record in bringing out the best in students, and in closing the achievement gap. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination.
AVID targets students in the academic middle – B, C, and even D students – who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard. These are students who are capable of completing rigorous curriculum but are falling short of their potential. Typically, they will be the first in their families to attend college, and many are from low-income or minority families. AVID pulls these students out of their unchallenging courses and puts them on the college track: acceleration instead of remediation.
Santan Junior High’s cafeteria has recently been decorated with a variety of inspirational pennants with some of our favorite colleges and universities. We are proud to be an AVID school!
