RUMOR HAS IT... YES, IT'S TRUE - CVHS is hosting the Homecoming Dance at HOME this year! Dance ticket price will include dinner (Habit or Tacos, your choice), caricature artists, karaoke, photo booth, and a 360 video stage. The outdoor dance floor will include a state-of-the-art rigging, with extra large video screens, CO2 cannons, disco ball and more. Tickets are on sale now, in the student store at snack and lunch, or on the CV WebStore. Only $55 with an ASB card, $70 without starting Monday, Oct. 3. CVHS FALCON PLAYERS PRESENTS ELEPHANT'S GRAVEYARD this Thursday, Oct 7 and Friday, Oct 8 at 4:30 and 7:00 pm in the MacDonald Auditorium. The play is a dramatic retelling of the true and tragic story of Mary the Elephant. Based on real events and incorporating the words of first-person accounts, it explores what happens when mob mentality dictates an irrational need for vengeance in the name of justice. Because of its mature themes, the play is recommended for audience members over the age of 10. Tickets are available at the door: $8 for students and $12 for adults.

NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH: Hispanic Heritage Month

Contributions to the entertainment world:

  • Gloria Estefan is a Cuban-American singer, songwriter, actress, and businesswoman.
  • She started her career as the lead singer in the group Miami Latin Boys, which later became known as Miami Sound Machine.
  • In 2015, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her contributions to American music
  • Received the Kennedy Center Honors in December 2017 for her contributions to American Culture Life.
  • Lin-Manuel Miranda is a Puerto Rican composer, lyricist, actor, and filmmaker.
  • A graduate of Wesleyan University in Connecticut, Miranda made his Broadway debut in the 2008 musical In the Heights, in which he starred and wrote the music and lyrics.
  • He is known for creating the Broadway musicals Hamilton (2015) and the soundtrack of Disney's Encanto (2021).
  • His accolades include three Tony Awards, three Grammy Awards, two Laurence Olivier Awards, two Primetime Emmy Awards, an Annie Award, a MacArthur Fellowship Award, a Kennedy Center Honor, and a Pulitzer Prize.
  • Gustav Dudamel was born in 1981 in Barquisimeto, Venezuela.
  • The Los Angeles Philharmonic took the initiative to sign the 27-year-old Dudamel as music director in 2009.
  • Since then, Dudamel has become one of the most decorated conductors of his generation.

He was named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in 2009.

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITY: The PTA of Verdugo Woodlands Elementary School will be hosting its annual Fall Festival on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2022. We are currently looking for local high school students interested in earning service hours by volunteering during our event. We will need 30 to 40 volunteers to run simple, carnival style game booths and monitor elementary-aged children inside an obstacle course. This will be a completely outdoor event, held in the daytime, between 10am - 2pm, inside the school campus. SENIORS - CLASS OF 2023

"P.E.O. STAR Scholarship is seeking graduating high school female students. The organization grants a scholarship of $2500. HURRY - Deadline to apply is next Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2022. Interested candidates must submit a preliminary application packet that includes a resume, unofficial transcript, and a personal statement describing an achievement that makes you a good candidate for this scholarship. Submit this packet to Mrs. Mulvoy in the administration office by snack on Monday, Oct. 4th.


SENIOR COLLEGE APPLICATION WORKSHOP

Hello Seniors,

We will be hosting College Application Workshops on Wednesday, October 12th in the library. The counselors will be giving a brief overview of each application. It is a chance for you to work on your applications and ask questions and receive support from counselors. We will be reviewing each application on October 12th during the following times:

9 - 10 AM : Common Application

10 - 11 AM : UC Application

11 - 12 AM : CSU Application


Legacy Awards – The Legacy Awards program begins on September 1, 2022. Legacy Awards provide $4,000 scholarships for children and grandchildren of dues-paying Elk members. SCHOLARSHIP OPPRTUNITIES

HEISMAN HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP – honors the nation’s most esteemed high school seniors – apply online at heismanscholarship.com The program recognizes and rewards male and female high school seniors who accomplish tremendous feats in the classroom, on the field, and within their community. Applicants must have a min. 3.0 weighted GPA, be participating in at least one sport and demonstrate leadership at school and in the community. Application deadline is October 18, 2022 deadline.


CVHS KOREAN PARENTS ASSOCIATION is offering three $500.00 scholarships. Each award is open to a graduating high school senior of Korean descent whose parent is a member of KAP. Refer to instructions for applying HERE. Students must submit a transcript and essay of self-introduction. Documents are to be submitted at cvhskpa@gmail.com. Deadline: October 23, 2022.


COCA-COLA SCHOLARS FOUNDATION scholarship application is period is now open. Apply online at https://www.coca-colascholarsfoundation.org/ Cokeurl.com/Apply2022

The 2023 Coca-Cola Scholars Program application deadline is 5 p.m. Eastern on Monday, October 31, 2022. Applicants who submit this Phase 1 application by the deadline can expect notification by the end of November.

To be eligible for consideration, applicants must be:

  • Current high school OR home-schooled students attending school in one of the 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and who will graduate high school during the 2022-2023 academic school year
  • U.S. Citizens (not Temporary Residents), U.S. Nationals, U.S. Permanent Residents,
  • Planning to pursue a degree at an accredited U.S. college or university
  • Have a min. 3.0 GPA
  • Demonstrate excellence in academics as well as serve as leaders in their school and community


THE ELKS NATIONAL FOUNDATION (ENF) 2023 Scholarship

Most Valuable Student (MVS) Contest: The 2023 MVS application is now open. Applications can be found online at enf.elks.org/MVS. The application deadline is November 14, 2022.

The Elks National Foundation (ENF) awards 500 four-year scholarships based on academics, leadership, and financial need. National awards range from $1,000 per year to $12,500 per year. The national awards will be announced in April 2023.

MVS scholarships are for students pursuing a four-year degree on a full-time basis (minimum of 12 semester hours), at a U.S. college or university next school year. Some important applicant details include:

Current high school seniors (or equivalent) who are citizens of the United States are eligible to apply.

Applicants do not have to be related to a member of the Elks.

Male and female students compete separately.

Applicants select from a list of the Lodges closest to their home address zip code. Please have your students choose Glendale Elks Lodge #1289 as their sponsoring Lodge. Complete details can be found at enf.elks.org/MVS.


EDISON SCHOLARS STEM College Scholarships for High School Seniors

· Must be a high school senior with at least a cumulative 3.0 GPA, plan to pursue studies in the STEM fields at a four-year accredited college or university and show financial need.

· Eligible STEM majors include computer and information systems, engineering, engineering technology, management information systems, mathematics, natural resources and conservation and physical sciences.

· Applicants must live in Southern California Edison’s service territory.

· Dependents of Edison International and SCE employees and retirees are not eligible.

· The 2023 Edison Scholars application window is open from October 3 to December 9, 2022.
