The Rewards of Consistency
I want to first thank you for your tireless effort, loving on our students and teaching like your hair is on fire to prepare them for college, career and life. I want to encourage us in these last few weeks leading up to winter break to press on and continue to show up everyday. Your consistency and effort is what grows students academically and socially. It is life changing work that only a few can do, and you are one of the few.
Thanks again for all of your hard work!
Jason

Literacy
Team, after Winter Break we will be adding a literacy component to our week. On Monday's during core connect students will read high interest books. On Fridays, we will be writing using the R.A.C.E strategy to answer writing prompts. For those who are unfamiliar, the RACE format prepares students to answer short and extended response prompts. It asks students to Restate, Answer, Cite evidence, and Explain their answer. There will be a couple of work shops on the RACE strategy before we begin.
STR Work
Strategic Planning
Your students will be taking home survey's on Monday for their parents to fill out. The district would like their valued input as we begin our strategic planning for the next few years. Please announce to your CORE Connect class, that the class that returns the most surveys filled out by their parents will receive a whole class treat. We can all collaborate to determine what the students would like as a reward.
School Culture
Our students often come to us in a state of hyperarousal. We can not change that fact but we can be proactive. Consider beginning class with soft instrumental music and do a focused-attention practice.
FOCUSED-ATTENTION PRACTICES
"A focused-attention practice is a brain exercise for quieting the thousands of thoughts that distract and frustrate us each day. When the mind is quiet and focused, we’re able to be present with a specific sound, sight, or taste.
Research repeatedly shows that quieting our minds ignites our parasympathetic nervous system, reducing heart rate and blood pressure while enhancing our coping strategies to effectively handle the day-to-day challenges that keep coming. Our thinking improves and our emotions begin to regulate so that we can approach an experience with variable options" (Desautels, 2016).
For the following practices, the goal is to start with 60 to 90 seconds and build to five minutes. Link
Reminders
- Remember to threshold during passing periods so that you can supervise students in your class as well as students in the hallway.
- Lead your lines from the middle, not the front or the back. Leading from the middle allows you to see and correct behavior that do not align with CORE.
- Weekly Data Meetings on Monday, November 11, 2019.
- Boys Basketball at Stonybrook on Thursday. 7th at 5:15 pm and 8th at 6:30 pm.
