Why Design?
PPS STEM
The Design Cycle in action: Investigate, Plan, Create, Evaluate. Eighth grade Individuals and Societies (world history) students explored the most important innovations of the Stone Age. The students will debate the significance of these creations and determine which served as prototypes of inventions that we use today. The students plan to recreate cave art and write persuasive arguments to justify their conclusions. STEM is used in every discipline! News from NOAA - The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported that July 2019 was the hottest month on record for the planet. Much of the planet sweltered in unprecedented heat in July, as temperatures soared to new heights in the hottest month ever recorded. The record warmth also shrank Arctic and Antarctic sea ice to historic lows. What precautions should we take to stay healthy during the summer months? How do rising temperatures affect our ecosystem? Global STEM
By Susan Scutti, CNN
The world's largest rainforest, the Amazon, spans eight countries and covers 40% of South America -- an area that is nearly the size of two-thirds of the US, according to the World Wildlife Fund. More than 30 million people live in the Amazon, which is also home to large numbers of mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles, most of them unique to the region. A new plant or animal species is discovered there every two days. The Amazon forest produces about 20% of earth's oxygen and is often referred to as "the planet's lungs." An inferno in the Amazon, two-thirds of which is in Brazil, threatens the rainforest ecosystem and also affects the entire globe.
