Architecture: Ancient Greece
Greek architecture is known for its columns. There are three types of columns: Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian. Other types of Greek art include pottery, sculptures and paintings. Every city-state had a temple dedicated to a specific gods. They went there to worship and make sacrifices. Some leaders like Pericles and Alexander The Great spread the Greek architecture through out Europe. We see Greek influence in architecture today in important buildings today, the white house, the capitol building, the supreme court, and the Lincoln memorial all have columns that show Greek influence today
Government: Ancient Greece
Greece had various types of government including, monarchies, oligarchies, tyrannies, and direct democracies. Some leaders included Alexander the great and Peyicies. Citizens were expected, when over 18, to vote. A new leader came into power every year, changes were made through lottery as well. There was slavery in ancient Greece. Two wars occurred, said wars being the Persian army as well as the Peleponnesian war. We see Greek influence in our government today with rules such as we have to be 18 or over to vote, and other things such democracy in general and term limits.
Sports: Ancient Greece
Those who played sports in ancient Greece were young men, those who watched unmarried women, as well as men and gods. These sports included fighting, Equestrian events, Chariot racing, etc. Greek sports developed to honor gods, as well Greek people thought of athletes as heroes, these athletes even had statues of them. Some Greek influence we see today in sports are the Olympics, some of the same sports, and athletes being famous.
Mythology: Ancient Greece
The Greek people told mythology through paintings and story telling. Some mythological heroes include Achilles, Actaeon, Atlanta, Bellerphon, Dioscuri, and Heracles, as well some gods are Aeolus, Aether, Amphitrite, Anemoi, Apate, Asclepius, Aura, Bia, Chaos, and Circe. Apollodorus of Athens is an example of a writer of mythology in Greece. According to the Greeks when someone died they went to the banks of a river that went to the under world.
Greek influence involving mythology include movies, books, and mythology in general
Philosophy: Ancient Greece
Some philosophers in Greece are Miletus, Heraclitus, Thales, Anaximander, Pythagoras, Socrates, and Aristotle. Some ideas/beliefs of them are geometry, Hippocratic Oath, and PI.
One book by a philosopher is The Republic by Plato. One important question about life is what binds the universe. The philosophers in Greece were not regarded well, as they questioned the government, one was even executed. Greek influence include doctors using the Hippocratic Oath, us using PI, the Pythagorean Theorem, and we still use/study geography.
