Principal's Message

Dear Sabre families,

It’s hard to believe we are in the latter half of September. Time is going quick and yes, we are having lots of fun as well.

This week is highlighted by our annual Terry Fox Walk/Run which is taking place on Friday, September 22, 2023. As a school community, we understand how important Terry Fox is to the fabric of the country. This Friday is an opportunity for our Sabre community to do our part in keeping his legacy alive. It has become a tradition at our school since Terry Fox started his journey in the early 1980’s.

This Friday can be tough on us and our kids as cancer affects many and it seems we all know of a loved one that has gone through this journey. Hence, as we try to do at SAL, day in and and out, we will look out for one another and support each other.

Before we go into more upcoming events, a bit from last week.

Our Fine Arts programming has kicked off the year with auditions for our Musical Theater and Drama Shows. These shows are a ‘must see’ and the information is posted below. Also, our Band Program is under way and do let us know if you are interested in volunteer opportunities which include helping at concerts, fundraisers, events and/or chaperoning.

Congratulations to our SAL volleyball teams. Four of the five teams played in gold medal games with the junior girls league team, junior girls tournament team, and senior girls all capturing gold medals. Also, Kudo to our junior boys for winning silver. Our Senior Boys Football Team remained undefeated in their win over Spruce Grove. Cross country, golf, and our swim team have all had initial meets and meetings and are also under way.

Big picture

Furthermore, and along the theme of student engagement, this Wednesday, we will have our SAL ‘Clubs Day’ where all of our clubs for the 2023 - 2024 school year will be on display in the main foyer at lunch for students to sign up for and gather more information. The following clubs will be offered:

  • Yearbook

  • Video Game Club

  • German Exchange

  • GSA

  • Movement

  • Debate

  • Indigenous Students and Allies Circle

  • Archery

  • Magic: The Gathering and Other Fantasy Card Games

  • ESports/Robotics

  • Alpha

Student ID Pictures for grades 11’s will be taking place on Monday and Grade 12’s will be on Tuesday. Should your child be away these two days, our next date will be on September 27, 2023. In order to purchase your student photo packages in approximately five days, you will go to www.mylifetouch.ca, and enter in your student ASN number as the password.

Our School Council Meeting will be taking place this Wednesday, September 20 at 6:30 p.m. in the Upper Library. All are welcome. This one, being our first of the year, will be held in person. We will move to a hybrid model, with both virtual and in person offering, starting in October.

In closing, after my failed weather forecast from last week, I will stay clear, pardon the pun, on any predictions for this week.

Take care and let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
