New Library Catalog System
I'm happy to announce that we finally have a new dynamic online Library Catalog. Students and staff can now search from anywhere. Our previous catalog could only be used on campus. Our new system which is Follett Destiny not only searches books in our library, but also provides recommended websites that have already been vetted by educators. We will also have access to district wide ebooks in the near future. I would love to schedule a time with your classes to visit the library and learn all about the new system.
How to Search the New Library Catalog
Recording #4
180,000+ Ebooks Available
TexQuest has added a new resource providing over 180,000 ebooks available to students & teachers. Ebsco ebooks can be accessed simultaneously so there are no checkouts required. There are books on multiple levels from elementary to college level. This is a great supplement to our library resources. There are some printing and saving limitations depending on the book but students can create accounts and save books to a resource folder. The book content is searchable and students can create and save notes associated with each book.
Schoology Update
SAISD has purchased the Enterprise version of Schoology so every teacher and student already has an account. Teachers automatically have courses set up based on your classes with students already enrolled. It is a great tool for sharing resources with students, creating assignments that students can submit, as well as self-graded quizzes! Make sure that you use the new link to access it: www.saisd.schoology.com. The login will look like the Office 365 login. See Mrs. De Waelsche for more information and training opportunities.
Library Cards
Please encourage your students to sign up for a San Antonio Public Library card and/or a Bibliotech Library card. These two libraries have great additional resources that are not available in the Burbank Library. Sign up forms are in the library as well as in every English class. Anyone that has a public library card can also sign up for a TexShare card which allows access to resources in over 1,000 other public, academic, and special libraries in the state! This can include inter-library loans and access to their databases. These are some great additional resources for research.
Don't Forget to Submit Book Requests
If you have ANY suggestions for library resources to be added to the collection, please fill out the form below and submit ASAP. I have a deadline of Nov. 4 to submit a district "wish" list that does not have budget limitations. Any requests after Nov. 3 will be considered for local funds which are limited. Consider future research topics and general interests that you feel would benefit the Burbank Library.
Book Review: The Hired Girl
Kids today might think they have it bad having to take out the trash, doing their own laundry, or working at a fast food restaurant. That's nothing compared to life in 1911. Joan Skraggs lives on a farm and does all the "women's work" since her mother passed away. She cooks meals for the men, keeps the house clean, minds the chickens, does the laundry, while finding time to read her favorite books. When her father refuses to give her the money from the eggs and burns her books out of spite, Joan decides she has had enough. Though she is only 14 years old, she leaves home and heads to the city of Baltimore with the hope of finding a job as a hired girl who can help with cleaning and cooking for a well to do family earning as much as $6.00 a week!
She finds work in a Jewish household and must learn their strange ways. Joan deals with many trials and errors as she tries to keep her secret that she ran away from home and pretends to be older than she is. It's a very heartwarming story written from the perspective of Joan's diary with great detail about life in 1911. I found it to be an enjoyable read and decided that I didn't have so bad when I was fourteen.
