The Hasty Howler
May - Parent Engagement Newsletter
From the Principal
Greetings Husky Family!
I am in amazement that we are here in May with only 20 days left of school. I just want to THANK, THANK, THANK our parents, students, and teachers for seeing this very unique year through to a close. We appreciate everyone’s part in helping our students have the best possible learning opportunities this school year. It has been an unusual one, indeed!
Again, we want to thank EACH of you and the important role you have played in your students’ education this year. Just as so many parents have expressed a new appreciation for what teachers do in the classroom each day, we are very appreciative of, and recognize the effort and support you have given your children to ensure quality learning throughout the remainder of the school year. This year, especially, it has “taken a village”! We love and appreciate our Hasty Fine Arts Academy Village!
Please take the opportunity this summer to visit the library with your scholar and borrow books that will encourage the love of reading. Our scholars have grown tremendously in reading this year and we don’t want all that learning to be lost. Ms. Freeman and Ms. Sanchez in conjunction with the library have recorded and information video for our families. Don’t miss out on watching the video.
Lasty, it has been a privilege to serve as the principal of Hasty Elementary this year. You have been warm and welcoming, and I look forward to serving our scholars alongside you next year. I am very proud of our teachers and the excellent efforts they have demonstrated during this very challenging school year. Thank you, again, for a successful and memorable 2020-2021 school year!
Sincerely,
Dr. Maria Rosario-Regan
FROM: Your Parent Engagement Facilitators - Mrs. Freeman & Mrs. Sanchez
Children don't come with manuals and as parents we all juggle work, family, school, and so much more. At times it is difficult to know exactly what to do to help our children. Because we know you want the best for your child, we at Hasty Elementary make a commitment to you to continue bringing you parent workshops with ideas, tips, and resources that will help you better support your child's learning.
You and your children have worked so hard and deserve a vacation, but please keep in mind the implications of "learning loss" over the summer break. Keep your child connected to the skills they have learned so that they do not forget them. If these are not practiced over the summer, students can lose some of what they have learned. Take time to reinforce those skills throughout the summer months.
On behalf of Mrs. Sanchez and myself, THANK YOU for all you have done to stay engaged in your child's education. We appreciate you and the teamwork! Michael Ferris says it best “There are only 2 keys to educational success: hard work & parent engagement!" It has been our honor and privilige serving you throughout the years!
NOTE: Do not forget that you have a virtual "PRC" Parent Resource Center if you need videos for math or reading: https://www.cherokeek12.net/userfiles/19/my%20files/2020-2021/title%20i/virtual%20prc%20english.pdf?id=22145
R.T. Jones Memorial Public Library
Our local public library is a great hub for the whole family! Summer vacation threatens to reverse many of the achievement gains that students and teachers worked so hard to reach during the previous school year. Our neighborhood library provides key services to children during the summer months and all year long, and they are free! It also has many services for teens and adults. Hasty Elementary has partnered with R.T. Jones Public Library to make sure students have the resources they need to succeed and to prevent summer learning loss. They truly make a difference in our community! Check out all their services from reading programs, computer use, videos, books and ebooks. Take the virtual tour!

Start Moving and Have Fun!
At Strong4Life, we don’t tell our families to exercise; we encourage them to get moving! That’s because if you are having a blast being active, chances are you’ll keep doing it. Being active is a great way to spend time as a family and create memories. Remember, short bursts of activity are easier to fit into busy schedules and are just as effective at getting your blood pumping as longer activity sessions. Visit https://www.strong4life.com for more tips and tricks, and to sign up for their newsletter.

Tips from the Nurse- Mrs. Morris
I can’t believe it’s our last month of school! Before school starts again in August, please make an appointment with your child’s doctor to get a signed physician’s authorization form for any medication, action plan, sports physical, or immunization record that your student may need during the 2021-2022 school year. We look forward to seeing our returning Huskies in August!
Stay safe, happy, and healthy!

Summer season is filled with outdoor fun but it’s still important to remember the importance of internet safety. Recently we held a parent training on this very important issue; here are a few reminders:
- Set parental controls on all of your child’s devices to prevent them for entering unsafe sites.
- Supervise your child when the are on the Internet – monitor their viewing activity.
- Establish rules for online gaming and be sure to know who your child is playing online games with.
- Teach your child about online “stranger danger” just as you would when your child is out in public.
- Remember not to use devices as babysitters. Online activities should always be supervised for all kids under the age of 13.
- Talk to your child about what to do if they see something that makes them feel afraid or uncomfortable.
- Let your child know that once something is posted, it is never truly deleted. Talk to them about the importance of good character and reputation online.
- Remind your child of family privacy and not to post their personal information such as address and phone number.
Be on the look-out for a link to our recorded virtual parent training on Internet safety – coming soon!
