Silver Strand Elementary School Week of March 4, 2019

Spotlights and Reminders

  • We love furry friends and that many of you walk your children and your pets to school! For reasons of health (allergies) and safety, however, you may not bring your pets onto school property (including our flagpole plaza). If you walk your pets to school for dropoff or pickup, please plan on waiting with your pet by the bike racks adjacent to our parking lot. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

  • We have a School Site Council Meeting on Wednesday at 3 PM. All are welcome to attend.

  • Mrs. Beheshti, our VAPA teacher, has created a website showcasing our visual and performing arts program and students' work! Check it out here!

  • This week’s theme is Women’s Contributions in History and Society: Let’s recognize and celebrate the contributions and achievements of women in society, including trailblazers like the first female Green Beret.

Important Health Information about the Flu

In Coronado Unified School District, our first priority is to provide a safe and healthy learning environment for our students. After all, we can’t educate children if they’re not in school and healthy. That’s why we want to share these important prevention tips that can keep your child healthy in the face of the recent death of 14-year-old San Diego County girl from influenza.

The seasonal flu vaccine is recommended for most everyone six months of age and older, unless determined otherwise by a medical provider. It is important to note that all of the strains for which the flu vaccine provide protection are currently causing illness in the county, according to county Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten. The vaccine is the best defense to protect from illness, and can help prevent severe complications and hospitalization. The flu vaccine cannot make a person sick, and the most common side effects are soreness, redness, or swelling at the injection site.

Wooten said there are several everyday prevention steps that students, parents, and school employees should take:

  • Practicing respiratory etiquette, including covering one’s mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing, or to cough into one’s elbow.
  • Practicing good hand hygiene, which means washing hands with soap and water for 20 seconds.
  • Routinely cleaning surfaces that are touched often, such as desks, countertops, doorknobs, computer keyboards, any hands-on learning objects, faucet handles, and phones.
  • Keeping students who are ill at home, including remaining at home until at least 24 hours after a fever subsides.
  • Completing any course of prescribed antiviral medication.

Many respiratory infections can spread from person to person and cause symptoms similar to the flu, and taking those prevention steps also may help reduce the spread of other viruses and bacteria.

For more information on the county’s influenza situation, visit the Health and Human Services Agency’s Influenza page.
