Are You Taking Care of You?
Amongst an array of other self-care and mental health initiatives that September recognizes, "National Self-Improvement Month" is an important topic to discuss. Many of us believe that self-improvement consists of changing who we are to become "better" for others...to become more of the person that we believe others want or need us to be. We change our behaviors, our thoughts, our style, our diets, our e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g; and we do this because we feel that these changes will make a good impression, that we will accepted, that we will feel connected; and, ultimately, that we will feel better about who we have become. Right? But, do we? Do we feel better about ourselves when we make changes for others? The answer is not so simple--sometimes, we do. And, sometimes we don't.
Making changes for the betterment of ourselves is extremely important. We know this; however, what we sometimes forget is that we lose focus on what is for us and what is for others. The idea of self-improvement is exactly as written...for your own self. Making conscious choices to celebrate your accomplishments, using your voice when it matters to YOU, taking time to rest when you know you need it, saying "no" when you know you just can't do it, wearing what makes you comfortable in your skin, reading what sparks your interest, doing what you love, and standing with your own convictions are all examples of self-improvement.
So, make that decision, every day, to put yourself first. That doesn't mean that you can't take care of others, it just means that when you choose yourself first, you're not only improving YOU, but all of those in your path.
And, when you need some inspiration...check this out!
