The Technology Campus is incredibly thankful for all of our faithful readers, and for that we would like to reward our families. Moving forward we will have a NEWSLETTER QUIZ located under the Principal's corner.
Quiz completion will automatically place your student into a drawing for a Dress Down Pass. Dress Down Passes will be awarded to 10% of entries for each building. The number of entries will directly effect the amount of prizes awarded for the week. Entries selected from the lottery must be correct upon review.
We hope that you have fun, and enjoy reading this week's edition! Entries are due the morning of Monday, November 26th.

First Grade
Ms. Kelly’s class is hard at work this week as we create our class cookbooks! We are learning about sequential writing, writing with a purpose, and following directions as we make our own recipes. Students are also researching ingredients, making a budget, and learning about where food comes from in this week’s lessons. Our class is also looking forward to our field trip to the Showcase of Citrus on Thursday. Thank you to all of our volunteers!
Mrs. Beckman’s class had a super week! In reading we read the folktale “How Leopard Got His Spots” and learned about writing commands. In math we continued to work on subtraction fluency. We also had an amazing time on our field trip to the orange grove! Thank you to all of our chaperones!
Ms. Molnar’s class got to read all about Sea Animals this week and learn about possessive nouns! In math we had our test on subtraction. The kids had an awesome time on our field trip to the Orange Grove! Thank you to all the chaperones!

In Press’s class, we enjoyed using potatoes to block print poppies for Veterans’ Day. Several of the kids dedicated a poppy to a veteran.
Fifth Grade
Also, in Ms. Zaremski’s ELA class, we started our new book study of a book called, “Restart”. It matches quite well with our new character trait of the month which is respect. We will be working on comparing and contrasting the events and settings in the book while reading this story. The students also had an opportunity this week to visit the Scholastic Book Fair. Some students even purchased new books to help them achieve their AR Goal this month.

Science Fair
OSS’s science fair is an excellent opportunity for our students to explore their favorite topic in science. It provides an avenue for student research, allow students to be actively engaged in their own learning, and to use their own creativity to solve a pressing problem in an imaginative way. A science fair builds a bridge between home and school - establishing bonds between students, parents, and teachers and inspires students to become life long learners.
All forms must be typed or filled out using blue ink. NO pencil!
Mr. Stampas is the adult sponsor. Stampas@orlandoscience.org, (407) 253-7304
Form 1B is signed by the student and the parent. Besides the start date of experimentation on form 1A (10/20/17), all other forms prior to experimentation will be dated in September.

STEM teams Forming
We have new STEM teams forming for upcoming competitions. These teams will meet off campus. The competition dates are in December, February, and May. These are general lower cost than some of the competition teams, but some cost is required ($15 per student for the February event and about $50 per team for the May event, and money for the t-shirts if they are not donated, and kit items.) I highly suggest looking into where the coach/adults work to see if funds are available for sponsorships.
Here are the list of teams that are forming:
- Gliders (K-6)
- Math (K-6)
- Mousetrap Car (K-6)
- Water Bottle Rockets (K-6)
- Egg Drop (K-6)
- Energy Transfer Machine (Rube Goldberg) (3-6)
- Junior Solar Sprint (4-6)
- Critter Comfort Cottage (4-6)
- Solar Energy Cook-Off (4-6)
- Vex Robotics (6)
- Balsa Bridge (4-6)
Please sign up at http://bit.ly/ossenergywhizteams if you are interested in your student joining a team. Students/parents will be notified if the student is selected for a team. No coach = No team. The point of these teams is for the experience. This is our first year and there is NO pressure on coaches or teams to win. We want them to have the experience, have fun, and be engaged in STEM.
STEM fair
K-5 STEM Fair
The STEM Fair this year is optional. It will take place during the month of October and is open for any student in K-5. One winner will be chosen from each grade level in K-5 to move on to the county's STEM fair. The winners will be able to showcase their display board on November 27th from 5-7 PM and at the county's STEM Fair on December 8th (Afternoon.)
Students in 3rd-5th are working in STEM class on the Exploravision project, a national STEM contest. Students in 6th grade are working on their projects for the County STEM Fair (Ying Expo.)
Teachers are not required to grade anything this year for STEM Fair. There will be weekly help online meetings for families with the first one on Wednesday, October 10th.
Curtis Science Competition
Are you interested in a fun science competition? There are spots open for each grade level. All you need to do is fill out the form on the link. K-4 is the Rising Stars Challenge and 5th and 6th is the Kinetic Challenge that needs a parent coach for each team. Requirements are included in the form.
Energy Whiz Competition
STEM Teams Are Forming!
Students from kindergarten to sixth grade are invited to join a STEM team. Teams will meet off campus and compete at between one to three competitions. There are eight teams to choose from! Students that are not on a competition team will have a better chance of making the team since we want to make sure that ALL students are able to compete in STEM competitions. Also, if a parent volunteers to be the coach, the student has a higher chance of being on a team.
The teams are: Mousetrap Car (K-6), Water Bottle Rockets (K-6), Egg Drop (K-6), Rube Goldberg (Energy Transfer Machine) (3-6), Junior Solar Spring (4-6), Critter Cottage (4-6), Solar Energy Cook-Off (4-6), and Vex Robotics (6).
If you would like to sign up for a team, please sign up online: http://bit.ly/ossenergywhizteams. Signing up on the form does not mean you are on a team. You will be contacted if you were chosen for a team.
For more information on Energy Whiz, visit their website: www.energywhiz.com/energywhiz. Here is a video about the events: http://vimeo.com/fsec/ew. Here is where you sign up as a volunteer: www.fsec.ucf.edu/go/ewvolunteer.

Orca's Core Values and character Education
Character Education has begun at OSES and we are having a great time learning our social skills at school and the students are learning how to use these tools successfully too! This year part of our Character Education curriculum we have introduced "Operation Impact" our goal is to share and show how our students are reaching out to the communities, families and other students to show their positive character traits.
Here are a few character traits:
- Kindness
- Empathy
- Trustworthy
- Reaching Out to Others
- Building Friendships
We want to see how your children are using their character traits outside of school and featuring them each week in our weekly newsletter!! This is a great way to spotlight your child's positive influence that they have in our community and school! We look forward to seeing your pictures and experiences.
Please send a few pictures and small description of your children's activity (encourage them to write it on their own too). Pictures must be handed in on Monday's in order to make it for the Friday newsletter. They can be sent in to your child's teacher or emailed to Mrs. Krygowski at katherine.krygowski@orlandoscience.org
We can't wait to see our wonderful students putting #Operation Impact to work in our community!!!

Costa Rica 2019
All of our families are invited to join us on a memorable STEM field trip to Costa Rica during Spring Break. You can watch the recording of the online parent help session here: http://bit.ly/ossstemincostarica.
If you are interested, deposits are due in November. The deposits hold your spots on the trip. The rooms are filling up, so deposits are the best way to save your room for your family.
Final payments are due by December 13th.
Just a reminder that everyone receives two shirts for the trip down and trip back. Students will also receive the learning journal. We all fly out of Miami together on the same flight. Holbrook takes care of all of the costs. That is why we all fly together both in and out of Costa Rica. The price includes all food, excursions, hotels, and tips for the driver and guides.
You can learn more about the trip here: http://holbrook.travel/orlandosci-cr19.
Here are the two places we are staying while in Costa Rica:
If you have any questions, please feel free to email Ms. Dyer or Mrs. Trujillo. We are excited to share this incredible experiences with our families!
