WM 1st Grade Curriculum Update
October 2019
Reading and Writing
During Reader's Workshop students will be word detectives using all they know to solve words. Students will write "How-To" books and share their expertise in step by step procedures. This will give them the chance to teach others through their writing.
Phonics
Math
This month features dominoes, dot cards, and the number rack to help children develop confidence with strategies for adding and subtracting single-digit numbers. They will have practice recognizing numbers in a set without counting (ex. seeing 5 on a die without counting).
Science
In first grade, we have 3 new units! They are: Air and Weather, Sound and Light and Plants and Animals. We'll also be exploring the Mystery Science website!
Social Studies
Our focus this month will be cooperative behavior. Students are practicing taking turns, sharing, and listening to others. We will also celebrate our unique differences in the classroom.
LMC - Library
Music
Technology
Students will learn how to navigate the laptop and be able to identify laptop parts. Students will be able to identify specific icons and use the touchpad to open and manipulate items on the computer screen.
Art
Why do people make art? Why is art important? Why do artists experiment and explore? What is an artist’s style? (Express Yourself! Self Portraits, Monet’s Bridge)
PE
We are working on dribbling, kicking, and passing skills. Students will play various games to enhance their skills. Towards the end of the month we will transition to throwing and catching.
Guidance
We are learning about Kelso’s Choices; the differences between small vs. big problems and the things we can do to solve small problems on our own.
